EricGRIT09 5
Specifically for Live TV - I have a Roku Premiere+ and when watching live TV via Emby the stream will continue seemingly indefinitely (8+ hours). This is with runaway playback protection enabled. At first I thought the option must only apply to standard library items (continuous episodes one after another) but upon a double-check I see the option says it also applies to live TV. So, is this a bug in my case in that it isn't working properly or is there a specific length of time over 8 hours at which the stream will stop? Is it able to be set to a specific time? Causing some issues with remote users currently as the Roku doesn't go into standby mode or stop the stream when only the TV is turned off. Understood this is mainly a Roku problem in general but I'm really curious how the runaway playback feature is intended to work, since it doesn't seem to do much for me right now, at least as far as I can tell for live TV. Jdiesel 1114
Do you have guide data for that channel?
ebr 14925
What he said - the app only checks to see if someone is still there on a program change. This is to keep it from bugging you during long broadcasts like Football games. So, if there is no program data, then it won't ever ask for confirmation of still watching. EricGRIT09 5
Can you please discuss an example? Sure - remote family member starts streaming Food Network at 4:00pm and it is still going at 11:00pm. Roku Premiere+, runaway playback enabled. They are turning off the TV but not the Roku, as Roku doesn't have a command via HDMI-CEC or anything like that to put it to "sleep" or kick it out of whatever it's currently streaming. Anything else I can provide there to be helpful? It has happened multiple nights in a row. Also, what happens when a new program starts? Message asking if you are still watching, and you have to press "yes" for it to continue? Edit - Also looks like the same family member started Food Network 30 mins ago so I can see if it goes late into the night again tonight. Didn't know they loved Food Network so much but I'll keep an eye on it. The guide shows new shows every hour. ebr 14925
Also, what happens when a new program starts? Message asking if you are still watching, and you have to press "yes" for it to continue? Yes, that's what happens. Are you saying that the stream does quit at some point? Are you 100% sure they aren't watching for some extended period? What programs were on at the time this happened?
EricGRIT09 5
Yes, that's what happens. Are you saying that the stream does quit at some point? Are you 100% sure they aren't watching for some extended period? What programs were on at the time this happened? Honestly I'm not 100% sure, more like 99.9% sure, but I did confirm that on my Roku Ultra I had no pop-up between programs when I tested myself last night. I didn't have it going 8 hours, but now my understanding is that it should pop up when a new program starts, right? Regardless of time played? Now that (I think) I have a better understanding of how it *should* function I can do additional testing on my end, but thus far I've never seen a message of this sort and I'll say my remote user experience is *very* out of the norm but again not 100% confirmed. No, it will only prompt you if you haven't interacted with the app at all in at least an hour. If the stream is shutting down at 11pm then it sounds like the feature is working as intended. Possible scenario: User starts watching at 4pm and watches normally until 9:01pm when they turn off the TV. The program at 9 goes for 2 hours until 11 when the system puts up the prompt and then stops the stream after there is no response.

I am currently testing this on my Roku at home and I might have noticed something worth mentioning here - because one of my sources is IPTV, it often buffers. I noticed on the Roku app it pops up with a loading screen each buffer (maybe just 1 second) and then continues. Could this loading screen be counted as user input, thus resetting the timer for runaway playback prevention? The admin interface on the server still shows total time of the stream correctly, btw, that does not reset. Erik 120
I have the same issue with a regular LiveTV stream (let me know if mods what a new topic instead). Server: 3.5.3.0 Roku Beta: 3.0.127 To get some good logs, I started playing liveTV channel at 11:52 EST, turned off the TV and left it overnight. This morning i check and the channel is still playing 6+ hours later. Erik 120
Yes, the guide data was all present and view-able within the guide just fine. Just a thought, that channel also had a recording at about 12:30am so could the shared stream (1x tuner watching the liveTV channel and 1x tuner recording a show on the same channel. Could the shared stream logic interfere with runaway protection? I can test on a channel now without any recordings and verified guide data and get some logs if you would like. @@Luke , the problem i have is someone starts watching a show, turns off the TV (not the roku) and the stream never terminated via runaway protection. I can turn the TV on hours later and the LiveTV is still playing.

ebr 14925
Okay, my apologies. This feature does not work right now for live TV in this app. It does work for video playback.
Erik 120
No problem. I wasn’t sure, but the setting menu on the roku says for LiveTV as well. That’s what let me to think it was not working. Thanks for the answer, can I assume it’s on the roadmap or should I make a feature request?
speechles 1920
You can assume we already have a fix and it is submitted. Just need higher ups to publish and deploy. LiveTV is an immediate priority.

Carlo 4330
I set this up on a Roku Premiere+ 9 hours and 17 minutes ago and it's still playing the same channel. The temp transcode file is over 10 GB already and of course still growing. Is this going to be fixed in the next release? Sammy 738
Okay, my apologies. This feature does not work right now for live TV in this app. It does work for video playback. How about just having Emby Server kill the stream and clear the transcode ts files after 4 hours? or 2 hours?
speechles 1920
I had something that would prompt the user after 5 hours and kill the stream if no reply. But @@ebr said that wasn't how he wanted it to work. We will have something for this soon. Please bear with us. It is a known issue at this point and we will get it solved. Thanks.
