Perplexed 25
Hi, I run Emby on Docker via reverse proxy. It worked well until suddenly a week ago it stopped casting to the Chromecast. This coincided with me buying Premiere, and I'm pretty sure that is not a desired side effect Everything plays fine on any other device, such as Android phone, tablet and browser. When I connect to the CC, it will display a message that Emby is ready to cast. Then when I try to play something, nothing else happens except a perpetual revolving circle on the screen. Here is a link to the log file, thanks for looking into this! https://expirebox.com/download/a0388d5c9eda4a89a0ebda3314c2d263.html
Luke 37096
Hi, when you connect with the android phone, what server address are you using?
Perplexed 25
I'm just selecting the server from the list. The actual address of the server is emby.mydomain.com... but I don't think I entered that manually. BTW you're fast in responding
Luke 37096
Are you using https?
Perplexed 25
Yes, I am... and CloudFlare. Edited September 10, 2018 by Perplexed
Luke 37096
What kind of ssl cert?
Perplexed 25
It's Letsencrypt, Luke. I also forgot to mention the server is a dedicated server that I rent, it's not in house.
Perplexed 25
Could my problem be related to this issue? https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/56771-chromecast-address Edit for a follow up: based on the advice of a friend I connected manually to the Emby server, rather than through Emby Connect. Right away my Chromecast started working again. I'm not sure what difference it makes (both connections show up as exactly the same in the settings), but at least I can play content again! Luke 37096
Are you running the same type of setup as that other thread?
Perplexed 25
I believe so... I'm not very technical myself (I know just enough to be dangerous) and a friend helped me get setup with Docker and Letsencrypt - but it sure seems like it is the same setup as mentioned in that thread. It might be worth a try to reconnect to the server manually - it sure solved it for me. Let's hope it lasts Edit to add again: if you are interested, I can share more information on what he wrote me. I don't feel comfortable sharing in public what was said to me in private, but he added some technical explanations that might help you. If you are interested, I'll PM you what he told me Luke. Luke 37096
But they're on a reverse proxy, are you?
Perplexed 25
This is what my friend told me: Emby is accessible via https://emby.yourdomain.com:port#. "port#" is going through CloudFlare but is avoiding the reverse proxy altogether (you could completely stop the reverse proxy and Let’s encrypt docker containers and you should still be able to get to Emby via that URL). If you go to https://emby.yourdomain.com, it hits the proxy on port 443 and then Emby responds with “here’s the real URL” and redirects the browser to https://emby.yourdomain.com:port#. In this case, the proxy is only used for that initial hit before the redirection. If I go to the port# URL directly, it obviously doesn’t even touch the proxy nor is the proxy even necessary. I wonder if, like Infuse, the Emby playback app is “assuming” 8096 despite what the server is telling it.
Luke 37096
Does the server dashboard display your remote address correctly? because if it is a remote connection then that is what will be used.
Perplexed 25
Does the server dashboard display your remote address correctly? because if it is a remote connection then that is what will be used. Yes, that is the weird thing - in both cases the dashboard displayed the EXACT same remote address settings, ports, address, etc. It gets even weirder... yesterday evening I wanted to cast to Chromecast again. It worked fine earlier that day when I connected manually, and I hadn't touched Emby the rest of the day. That night I tried to cast - same problem was back (screen shows it's connected to Emby, but nothing played). So, I connected manually (again), and my content played without a hitch again! Perplexed 25
Do you have any idea what could be the culprit, Luke? I mean technically I could probably get by, but I don't really like the idea of manually reconnecting to the server each and every time I want to watch something... The problem started about a week ago, when I bought lifetime premiere...
Luke 37096
What do you mean by manually reconnecting to the server?
Perplexed 25
What I meant is if I click the server (Paris in this case, because the Emby US server is not installed using docker and works fine either way) ChromeCast won't work. But if I click "Add Server" and type the server credentials manually it will work... at least for a little while. Then when I want to watch something else, I have to go through the process again... Luke 37096
Instead of doing that, as a test, can you confirm that restarting the app also resolves it?
Perplexed 25
Yes! That seems to work fine!
