Bring back the convert on the fly...

Luke,

I hate to tell you this, but the new convert and sync option just does not work well.

The old option worked 100% better.

I am on latest release and have the convert at full speed checked permissions are set and the problem is it can never keep up.

Shows finish recording and they get queued and the next day I go to watch them and they are still in mpeg2 format.

I then go to server dashboard and have to manually kick off the conversion.

This is on the latest linux version on Ubuntu.

Yes, the old option you could not seek, but the big advantage was the conversion was done right after the recording finished.

This new option you came up with just does not work well.

Maybe it works better on windows?  I don't know.

If we ever did, it would be with a smaller feature set in order to ensure that everything "just works".

There would be no on the fly conversion to mkv - that causes playback problems, so therefore it would be kept in it's original mpegts container. The only thing you'd really gain from that is mpeg2video -> h264 conversion, because the mpegts container and the audio would remain the same as original.

I would like that solution. Smaller files, deinterlaced and better supported.

The issue is that the conversions do not fire WHEN the show has finished recording. Someimes it never happens.

If the conversion kicked off straight away it probably would not be a problem.

Mark is correct,

part of the problem is schedule based instead of event driven.

What I need is the recordings from the TV to not be MPEG2 so they don't transcode.

When they transcode the seek is not as smooth, they take up more space etc.

When we had the convert as it records option it just worked and I was completely fine with it once I knew the seek did not work because of that.

It's actually pretty rare that I watch a show as it records.

Maybe if we had a supported post record script to do the conversion that might be ok.

Any update on this, the current conversion stuff is not acceptable.  Bring back the convert on the fly, it worked the best, this new stuff you added is simply not reliable and messes things up.
