Question about movies in rar files

So I decided to test emby since plex wasn't for me.

I added a library for tv-shows, no problems there.

When I add a movies library and test to add  3-4 movies not a single one will be added though. Nothing at all shows when I browse "movies" in the app or web.

I've rescanned, tried different names on the folder, removed and readded the library but nothing works.

Naming on the movies' subfolders are standard.

Its on a synology NAS and the folder structure is :

/volume1/user/media/movies

/volume1/user/media/tv-shows

Just for fun I tried to drag a movie from the movies folder to the folder for tv-shows.

It actually showed up and metadata was fetched correctly. If I tried to play it from there I got " Playback error, no  compatible streams currently available...." etc.

Is this a known issue? What am I doing wrong?

Hi, what are the contents of the movies folder?

It could look like this:

/volume1/user/media/movies/Coco.2017.720p.BluRay.x264-SPARKS

Then movies would be in folders with rar-files, normal releases.

PenkethBoy

do you have your library folder paths overlapping

i.e. one pointing to a subdirectory of the other

Can we see the complete contents of one of those folders? Thanks.

Like a screenshot of all the files viewed in explorer or something?

Nope

Hello @@kilroy82

As a quick sanity check, have you configured the permissions as per https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Synology-:-Setting-Up-Your-Media-Library-Share

Best

Permissions are fine. Just to be sure I created a new share with the help of that guide and recreated a Movies library in emby server with this new folder.

Same problem again, nothing at all can be seen in the library.

Yes please, thanks.

Good day,

You just need to extract "rar" file by winrar or similar until.

Then delete that rar's files and then do refresh on that item.

My best

Right we don't support videos in rar files.

Oh I'm sorry, thought that was standard but I've only used kodi and plex before and both support rar releases.

Is it something you're goint to implement in the future perhaps?

Thanks for the help btw, tested to unrar a movie and it worked!

I have to correct myself...

Plex does NOT support rar files.

This is definately something that would give you guys an edge over them  ;)

We've got a dev that posted a 250$ goal few days ago so I just increased my posted bounty so we'd reach that goal.

The bounty is up at 260$

The last real activity in that thread seems to be a year ago.

By the looks of it you guys aren't very interested in adding this feature but I really do believe that you're underestimating its value.

You say the interest from users is low but I'm pretty sure that many scans the website, find out it doesn't support rar files and just move on without anyone knowing about it.

The thing with rared files is that it is a standard from "the scene", nothing regular people choose because its an advantage. Then for obvious reasons they need to keep the rar files for a while and having both them plus the extracted file/s is a huge waste of space.

Hence the need for players to be able to read files directly from rar archives.
