'auto' quality stuck at 480p

I'm using emby on both my iPad and iPhone away from home, and I notice whenever I put quality setting to auto, emby will choose '480p-720kbps' regardless of the network situation. I manually put it to 1080p-6mbps (where most of my videos are), and it plays fine without any buffering issue. so my network is more than capable to sustain a 6mbps+ playback, but emby still choose 720kbps. I tested direct file copying speed, I get anywhere from 10mbps - 60mbps.

 

I'm coming from plex and with plex's auto quality, the server/client adjust quality on the fly, just like youtube/netflix. it will start playback at a lower resolution and up the resolution during the playback. if the network quality drops, the playback quality will also drop on the fly without any intervention. does emby do the same?

Hi, our Auto setting will measure once prior to playback. It doesn't change during playback although this is something we plan to add in the future.

 

For now the workaround is simple, you can manually set it as needed. Thanks.
