Hitsville 37
Hey guys. I just decided to try things out again with Emby after a year or two back on Plex. Generally, I'm loving it and unlike Plex you have some beautiful clients. I have an ATV 4K and a Shield. The shield is my preferred device though as I'm all about Remuxes with non Apple friendly DTS (and generally high bit rate). I have encountered one issue though with some HDR content. After trial and error, I have managed to get HDR working after I realized the files where transcoding until I upped the maximum allowed bitrate. But here's the thing... Setting to the maximum 100Mbits/sec almost every file direct plays and gives HDR. So whats with the auto setting? Those same files in auto cause a huge amount of those files to transcode, so losing HDR. The obvious solution is to keep it set at 100Mbits/sec. BUT.... there are some files that clearly have higher bitrates than that. Baywatch for one will not (with any setting) direct play so HDR is gone and "stats for nerds" tells me that the bitrate is too high to direct play. So is there some hard limit in the auto setting that's actually below 100Mbits/s? Either way, could we have the 100Mbits/s increased to cater for such files? EDIT. Oh actually looking again at stats or nerds it's saying Direct play error. It is, however, reporting the bitrate at 110Mbps although according to MediaInfo the bitrate is generally lower than the majority of my other 4K Remuxes. Anyway here's the media info just in case anyone spots anything out of the ordinary with this particular file. Sorry I did try attaching but couldn't. Luke 37167
Hi, direct play error generally means the app had some kind of problem decoding the video file, and therefore switched to transcoding to ensure successful playback. @@ebr may be able to provide more info. Thanks !
ebr 14947
Luke is correct, it tried to play it directly and failed so fell back to remuxing/transcoding it so it would play. In short, it has nothing to do with the bitrate. however, reporting the bitrate at 110Mbps Are you sure about that? What, exactly, does the label in front of that 110 number say? Hyp3rD 10
I confirm, I had the same problem yesterday and I just change the speed option from auto to 100Mbits and it's work. Report 115Mbits in reading.
Hitsville 37
Wow thanks for all the speedy responses. Coming back from Plex I'm not used to it. Luke is correct, it tried to play it directly and failed so fell back to remuxing/transcoding it so it would play. In short, it has nothing to do with the bitrate. Are you sure about that? What, exactly, does the label in front of that 110 number say? Yeah was kinda wondering myself now I may have misread/misunderstood something. In stats for nerds its saying under streaming info.. Bitrate 110.00Mbps Max bitrate setting 110Mbps In original Media Info it shows the file as 54.91 Mbps. More curious is the fact I am also setting up Emby on an online dedi. All my local media is mirrored to Google. Having got that same file scanned into Emby on the remote dedi the file plays perfectly, so I would have just put it down to the local file being corrupted in some way. However the local file has no issues in MrMC. Either way, it's no big deal really. So far it's just a single file. I am still curious though regarding the other files that force transcodes in auto but are happy with the max bitrate at 100 M/bps (as I mentioned earlier it's not every file. I confirm, I had the same problem yesterday and I just change the speed option from auto to 100Mbits and it's work. Report 115Mbits in reading. I'm glad you managed to reproduce. Solution ebr 14947 Posted June 14, 2018 Solution Share Posted June 14, 2018 On the Shield, the auto setting on a local network will default to 80Mb/s. I didn't feel we could assume bandwidth for 100 but you can always raise it manually. On other devices, we assume lower defaults according to their specs (between 21 and 30Mb/s)
