Mi box issues / observations

I don't quite get what is going on myself i hope to get some idea's :)

With the mi boxes they both are acting in the same manner which is at least good for consistency.

Running the stable android tv build via play store i cant play 101 dalmations ( and a few other movies ) on the mi boxes ( it plays just fine on the fire tv with emby ) it just sits there and spins.

If i switch the mi boxes to use an external player ( vlc ) it plays just fine, but many recorded tv shows dont play well or i get an error that there is no player available to play the recording.

Using the beta build the recordings play fine but live tv freezes.

**

Also for reference the mi boxes are not moded, they are running android tv 6 with the latest official OTA patch.

What does the server do (logs) when you fire up 101 dalmatians? What is the media info for the movies that don't play?  What is the format of the recorded tv?  Are you still on wifi?

It is mp4 aac4 audio. I have attached a screenshot of the movie. Mind you on the same device it plays with vlc and it plays in the living room via emby on the fire tv.

Also yes still on wifi. with stable ver of emby live tv plays fine.

When i try to play it it just spins a few times like its loading but nothing happens.

what do the logs say?

That is a good question, i have no idea. I just tried it again so i could post a smaller sample from the log. Emby quit trying to play the file and brought me back to the info screen at 10:50am est for reference.

well I see 2 things that stand out, though I'm not sure of the root cause or whether it's the problem.

1)  Not sure whether you're purposely blocking premiere status registration, but it's blocked/timing out.

MediaBrowser.Model.Net.HttpException: Connection to https://mb3admin.com/admin/service/registration/validate timed out

2)  You've got some serious lag issues on your network to the box.  eg, it took almost a minute to queue up 101 dalmations.

HTTP Response 200 to 192.168.1.179. Time: 47644ms (slow). http://192.168.1.50:8096/emby/Items/472783e45695d3c6995398f5e9f6233a/PlaybackInfo?format=json

and most other HTTPRequests to the box are taking multiple seconds to return (they should take under a second if the environment were healthy).

I am not sure why that would be blocked, i have no controls on my router for outbound traffic.

The connection to the mi box is a bit curious.

Pinging it from the emby box its better but not great. Pinging my router is in the fractions os ms.

But now i cant bloody log into my emby server from the mi box even on the kids account that doesnt have a pw.

Its saying invalid user when i select my kids account which is on the server.

Not sure if this helps, but when i have emby use vlc to play movies 101 dalmatians starts up quickly.

Its really quirky to me, because if i tell emby to use vlc 101 dalmatians loads nice and quick, the traffic cone only completes 1 rotation before it is playing. Also other media like aladdin which is in the same format does not have such issues.

I think i will try updating the mi box to android tv 7 once i have the original firmware downloaded safely.

Post the details of those files. There may be differences between them. Maybe share a piece of one that doesn't work?

Ok my wife is also watching pride and prejudice and its frozen up multiple times while doing this, something might be up with the server but i am not sure what. I have very few things running on it. Cpu utilization is like 15%

So after updating to android tv 7 it is more responsive. The OTA update for 7 is causing issues the thing crashes every time it tries to do a ota update.

These Amlogic boxes do not play VC1 encoded videos very well (natively).  It has to be transcoded by your server.

They are H264.

So Android 7 is ready for upgrade?

Well.... I found a zip file for the mi box to update it to android tv 7. Had to get it from a source other than xaiomi because they pulled their update / beta. Once i updated to android tv 7 there was a OTA update for it, but it crashes when it tries to update.

Otherwise for me android 7 is working better. Now with it running 7 it plays all my movies but odly some movies require me hitting playback correction to direct stream, including 101 dalmations. Seems so weird to me. I would bet these issues dont happen with shield devices but that is a lot of money. I am wondering what can be done with a rpi3 honestly. Especially if i could get a remote like the bluetooth remotes the mi box3 use.

Concept wise for the rpi3 i am thinking raspbien os since its pretty trimmed down anyway and having emby theater set up to open up right after boot with a simple bluetooth remote it would work well. I am somewhat tempted to try this.

Actually just looked it up and emby theater for rpi is considered alpha. Guess I will stick with the mi boxes for now and try working these kinks out.

That's what I thought. There's no official release for it. Even the MiBox 4 runs Android 6. It's a beta, so there won't be support for it. That's why I haven't used it. So how well does the emby beta app, work on it?

Not sure, I haven't signed back into beta for emby. The stable on 7 is working better. What is getting me lately is why live TV is having issues on the fire TV in emby but the hdhr app has no problem

I am thinking many of these oddities i run into are issues on the device firmware. The mi box is playing more of my media reliably now on 7 and emby is more responsive. It took several seconds for icons to load and such before, now they are poping right up.

I guess what's throwing me off is that I have had 0 issues w/ the mibox aside from the known dts issue.  Everything works.  Can you create a 1 min sample for us to test out?

AVC just means Advanced Video Codec. See where it says CodecH264? That's the codec. VC1 is a different codec.

So that file has two different video codecs for one video??  Strange

Same here. Mine runs like a champ, and for dts it gets transcoded and plays just fine. Although, I haven't tested that on the beta app.

No, AVC is just a category, of sorts.

converting from vc1 is a full re-encode.  @@tdiguy, is this behavior only from vc1 encoded stuff?  the live tv stuff is unrelated, but I'm curious if you can try re-encoding, even a sample, to just h264 whether it exhibits the same behavior.  I'm going to go check my library to see if I have vc1 stuff now.

I will have to see how to go about making a sample of that movie. I would laugh if the sample works fine for me also.
