abescalamis 75
Would you consider this? Current way: Emby reads the movie information and looks for the best subtitle it can find (only downloads one subtitle per language and the settings allow you to select two languages), then it downloads the subtitles for all movies and save it as metadata to the Emby server or video file, then in the player you can select the downloaded subtitle. The problem by Emby picking one subtitles is that sometimes it gets a bad sub or an out of synchronization one even when there is a perfect match for your video in the subtitle website, and the user literally has not control over the subtitles, and for the subtitles to be available you would have to wait for emby to do a scan and download the subtitles. Better Way: I would prefer if Emby would handle the subtitles independently from metadata, and that it wouldn't scan the entire library to download one subtitle for each movie; instead, when a user is watching a movie it can select subtitles from the providers website and select one and then the subtitle gets downloaded and if it doesn't work, you can select another one from the subtitle website and that would replace the previously selected/downloaded one; and convert the current way into a plugin that scans the library and downloads subtitles automatically. That would be a combination of how kodi and emby work! the best of the two worlds. Edited March 1, 2018 by abescalamis
Luke 34655
It's something I've thought about. It's possible for the future. Thanks.
Michael151260 0
Great suggestion this is how it works with Kodi but I much prefer emby . One more thing I would like is a choice of English Uk or US as the subtitles are different frame rate.

abescalamis 75
Great suggestion this is how it works with Kodi but I much prefer emby . One more thing I would like is a choice of English Uk or US as the subtitles are different frame rate. Currently, it detects automatically the framerate and tries to get the right subtitle for your video file. Emby has the potential to be better than kodi, it just needs time to get there, if it will be me, I would create the current subtitle engine into a premium plugin, then I will use the way I suggested as the default subtitle engine. I currently don't use Emby to download subtitles, I use something call subliminal, which is the base for the plex subzero plugin. the reason why I use it is because it supports more subtitles providers, here is the list: addic7ed, legendastv, opensubtitles, podnapisi, shooter, thesubdb, tvsubtitles and will add soon Argernteam, tusubtitulo and cinemast. I have this program set on my NAS and automatically downloads the subtitles without any interaction and I've also used it on windows and Linux mint. I will try to write a tutorial because I read a lot of people mentioning that they want something like the plex subzero plugin, without knowing that subzero plugin was created by a plex user (not plex) who took the opensource subliminal program and turn it into a plex plugin, the same can be done for emby. I didn't put the link for the subliminal github because I don't know if it goes against the rules of this forum. Norin 1
would like to ask for another provider in portuguese PT wich already have an addon for kodi. https://www.legendasdivx.pt it is a private subtitle site, but it as lots of good subtitles sometimes it has subtitles which are not on opensubtitles. subscene i think is also one of the best subtitle sites around mainly for english subs if you want to consider adding them as well. it is just a feature request. abescalamis 75
Thanks @@abescalamis for raising this. This is why I use emby plugin in Kodi just to have download freedom. Yep, I also only use the emby for Kodi, none of my users use the emby apps. The problem I noticed is that at this point its really hard to do, the current subtitle way is too deep in the code, Emby could had been the King of Subtitles, even better than Kodi itself and plex they could had made buying the Premium Key more appealing. I would have done the current way a plugin for premiun users only, and then I would have Emby work exactly like the kodi subtitles works. There are subtitles subtitle sites that don't have an "API" like Subdvix and they have Spanish subtitles that no one in the world has but cannot be used as a provider to automatically download subtitles because they don't have an "API" but can be used to download subtitles like kodi does. Luke 34655
It really just depends. Does Subdvix terms of use allow automated pulling from their website? That's the most important thing. The actual method of doing so is not quite as important.
abescalamis 75
They allow it, but as far as I know the plugin would need to scrape their site to find the subtitle, they don't have the options to look subtitles by hash, etc, you can only search by using the title. If this providers gets added to download subtitles automatically, it will probably download one out of sync for the movie.
Luke 34655
Then why bother if it's out of sync?
abescalamis 75
Then why bother if it's out of sync? I don't think you understood what I meant, I will rephrase it. I would made Emby's current subtitle system a plugin for Premier users only, and for the free version of Emby I would had made it just like Kodi, (Example: you could download a subtitle during playback) the free version would only download the subtitle for the movie that you are watching, "No batch downloading". Why would the above made Emby the King of subs: Like you said, there is no point to add subdvix to automatically download subtitles because it will download the wrong one, but you could add "subdvix" to the free way of Emby, because you will visually select the correct subtitle. There are many good subtitle websites just like subdix, and those are pointless to add to the automatic download subtitle system, but they can be added to the free simple subtitle system that let you choose the subtitle to download when you are watching a movie. Out of a lot of sutitle websites only a few can be use to batch download, the others are just like subdix. The above will also attract users to subscribe to the premiere licence. ebr 14343
Scraping sites for metadata is not a viable approach. We need to work with published APIs.

miniliQuid 84
Getting back to the request from the poster, this would come in handy, also would love to be able to additionally as server admin be able to lock correct subtitles in place. Say someone already watched the movie and downloaded English subtitles that are okay, I start watching the movie it shows me the same English subs, I see they are fine/correct and can lock them so no other users can "replace" them by selecting a different source. That way eventually all the correct subs will be in library, but when movies haven't been checked by "server managers" people can still pick a different subtitle in case the current ones are wrong.
