Well, I suggest you switch to Embycon if possible. For sure if your server keeps doing this, you'll always see it in Emby for Kodi. :(

How does your folder structure, file namings and .nfo look like? I don't get why Emby uses a year value for a season number Oo

But switching to Embycon doesn't change the fact that there is a bug in the fast sync in Emby.

 

I guess I'd hope we'd rather find and fix the bug than to paper over it by just using another tool.

There's no bug in the fast sync. The server generates all the updates, the fast sync just records this so the add-on in Kodi can quickly find what's been modified on your server.

 

Edit: But I understand your sentiment. I want to fix this too for you. But we need to find what's causing the server to constantly create those entries. It is not normal.

That happens because my recordings are being recorded from TV (not using Emby, but something different) and the metadata for a program is not known before it starts recording so it has to name the season with something so it uses the year as a placeholder.

 

Then the recording starts writing into a file in that folder and once the recording starts metadata lookup is done.  Once the metadata lookup has completed the file/folder is renamed into the proper season/episode.

 

Sometimes the metadata lookup fails though and so the file gets left in the year-named folder.

 

But why should have year-based Season folders be a problem?  If it is a problem, it shouldn't be and that needs to be fixed.  Some shows actually use a year-based season naming structure so this needs to be supported.

Season with the year is fine to use. I use that format for my daily shows.

With the info provided by shred00 just above, does that explain why Emby is doing what it is doing?

Ah ok. I never faced such season namings. My recordings are all stored in one folder and get deleted as soon as they are watched (all controlled by TVHeadend and not by Emby). And my shows have S01/S02/S03/etc, but now I understand why the year is used.

What is worth adding I think is that these recordings that have season as year instead of actual season number, there is no .nfo file for them.

 

Could recordings without .nfo files be a cause of this problem?

Those log messages are going to happen sometime so just the presence of them in one single log does not indicate a problem. The only thing that would be a problem is if the same ones are being created and removed repeatedly.

I'm not sure if this normal or not.  Or if it's even causing or related the massive fast sync problems in fact.  I'm just following the opinions here.

Well. The fast sync only record server events. So whatever the server is doing, it is definitely generating your 500 updates you are seeing. I guess the next step is figuring out if it's the same items being processed over and over. I'd say, the best way to figuring this out is with two Kodi logs. It will print the item names being updated to log. So two separate days that contains the fast sync updates would give us this information.

In cases like last night, it's every item -- not just a case of some number of items that were being updated over and over.  The ~500 or so items that it updated equals the total number of items in that user's library.

 

So we don't really even have to look at a Kodi log to see what is being updated.  It's everything.

 

I think what we need to focus on is the entire list of what constitutes an item change such that fast sync thinks it needs to be transferred to the client again and rule out each item one by one.  IOW, what conditions could cause an item to be flagged as needing to be sent in a fast-sync where that item is not at all a new item.  I can quite clearly see the fast sync processing progress in the on-screen dialog and the adds are a few and the removes are a few, but it's the "updates" in between that can be 500 items.

You misunderstand how the fast sync works. The server triggers websocket events when it scans your libraries. Each event contains ids of what the server said has been modified. The fast sync simply records it. When you turn on Kodi, Emby for kodi asks the server plugin for all items to update since last time Emby for Kodi was on.

 

The fast sync doesn't think. It just records events. While Kodi is running, if your server is scanning libraries, Emby for Kodi receives those events live. I hope this makes sense to you. If the server triggers an update event with ids, there is nothing else that will prevent that update down the line, because that's just not how things works.

 

The server update event should be prevented in the first place. And that's where we are falling short, to understand why this is happening.

I don't really misunderstand how fast sync works.  I understand that it's just updating the client with what has changed on the server since it was last connected.  I am just generally using the term "fast sync" to cover everything involved with a fast sync actually working which is including the server identifying things that have changed (that haven't really).

Yep - the symptom is fast sync, but clearly the issue is that the server is generating 'updates' when things don't get identified correctly.  I have seen that before... Nothing that can be done on the Emby for Kodi side unfortunately.

 

Honestly - I really think EmbyCon is better in a 'DVR' style environment with content changing often.  Emby for Kodi is better suited for very large and cultivated collections.

 

You can actually use both - Emby for Kodi for movies and EmbyCon for TV...

 

That isn't to say it shouldn't be fixed, but it isn't going to be quick I don't think.

Any more ideas here?  I'm still seeing incremental syncs with updates in the neighborhood of 500-600 items, which is usually the entire library for a given user.

 

Clearly within every 24-48 hours, every item in my library is being "refreshed" such that an incremental sync thinks it needs updating to clients which have been connected in the last 24-48 hours.

 

What do I need to do to see why every single library item is being considered updated on the server?

Check the server logs and talk to the server team.

I would, if I knew what I was checking for. I keep asking for what to check for and never seem to get an answer.

 

You could set up a new emby library with just a few test items in it and create a new user with access to just that library. Reproducing the issue with a much smaller test set of data might help track down the issue.

So, if I were looking for a needle in a haystack, I would agree with that. But I don't even know what I am looking for so I don't know if there is a haystack that I am trying to find a needle in.

 

On the other hand, a large library makes the problem really obvious. When my Kodi box is supposed to be doing an incremental sync and it says there are 600 updates, there is no question that every single item in my library is getting refreshed every 24-48 hours. If I had a very small library, as you suggest for debugging, I would not notice such a small number of items being refreshed so frequently because they would get masked by a quick (even though not really incremental) update.

 

So in this case, I would say that a large library is exactly what is needed since it makes the problem so obvious and provides a lot of items to look for some kind of pattern over.

I'd like to help resolve it. Do your tv series have season folders, or no?

 

They didn't originally but I reorganised them all into season folders a few weeks ago when it was thought that virtual season folders might be a cause.  So to be clear, yes, they all have season folders now.

I had the same problems until I upgraded my Kodi addon to newest beta version, now incremental sync works like before.

 

I would like to apologize to developers I said I will post my server log to pinpoint the issue but I had some personal problems, I forgot to do it.

And thank you for all your hard work and this awesome software.

So a number of Emby server updates and even Emby Kodi addon updates later and this problem is still happening.

 

I'm not entirely positive of this data item but maybe it only happens when I have not done an update in closer to two days rather than one day.  Perhaps helps trigger an idea.  Like how long does Emby server keep track of changed items before it starts dropping the oldest changes and then requires any clients that need an update since before the drop time to do a full refresh?

 

Perhaps it's not even that sophisticated and it's just telling clients to update anything that has a "modified" timestamp newer than it's last update.  In which case we are back to why is Emby server marking everything on my server as needing an update every day or two?

The other users affected confirmed it as resolved so we'll have to start from the beginning. Can you please discuss an example and attach the emby server log? What you can do is enable debug logging on the server, then run a full scan. The scan can help tell us if items are getting refreshed for some reason. Thanks.

Doing that right now then. Do you want another library scan with debug after that or shall I wait to see if the problem persists before doing that?

 

Also, there's something going on with your file system, perhaps a drive down?

Indeed, it's been down a while. I have just not yet gone through all of my Libraries to remove it as I'm not yet sure if I am going to replace it or not and don't want to have to first undo all those Library settings only to have to re-do them later.
