I am trying out my new Roku Ultra .. I don't currently have a surround sound system  So I thought Emby would  copy the video & trancode  the DTS audio audio to ac3 5.1 or something similar

but it direct played  so it had no audio

Tried the same thing in Plex it copied the video and transcoded the audio to ac3 5.1

Why didn't emby do the same I am just wondering

I have 2 roku ultras, both just connected to TVs (not surround or anything special). The roku auto configured the sound capability of the TV normally (if connected through HDMI), but check your setting for what audio output is set to.

In the dashboard I show direct streaming from emby and that's for files (mostly mkv) with 5.1 or whatever).

As a follow up I will say it transcodes the file normally from the browser and if you lower the quality in the Roku app it'll transcodes  but if its on automatic it will direct play with no audio

I think you need to set the audio properly in the roku settings. I think the auto doesn't always work like you would expect.

Ok you might be right.. I set the Roku to stereo and the movie transcodes as normal in Embys Roku app

but the question remains why did i have to do that with Emby and  not with Plex it transcoded without changing the Roku settings

It sounds like their defaults might be a little more conservative than ours. that would be my guess at least.
