corylorentz 3
I noticed that none of my files were playing on the Emby Fire TV app from my Emby server last night. I decided to update to the latest version to see if that would help the issue. I have installed the latest version of the server for Mac, and still get the same playback errors... On the Fire TV app, it attempts to play and then gives up saying there are too many errors. From the local server itself and on any other iOS device, playback is not working and goes back to the still image of the movie. I have attached the logs from the most recent activity. I also did a fresh install, eliminating all previous emby files... none of this seemed to work... please help. Thanks, Cory Emby Log.pdf
Luke 37064
Hi @@corylorentz, it looks like you're trying to play a dvd or bluray folder rip. This issue is resolved for the next release of Emby Server. However, while we are here, it's important to point out that transcoding of folder rips is only experimental. For the best possible experience we recommend converting to plain video files. Thanks !
corylorentz 3
Hey Luke, thanks for the quick response. I've always used Emby to play these DVD rips, and it has always worked pretty good. Is there a beta of the next server i can download where this issue is resolved already?
Luke 37064
We don't currently do betas for OSX, but the next release will be very soon. We are also going to add in-app messages about the experimental transcoding just to make sure that expectations are set appropriately. Thanks. Luke 37064
@@corylorentz Actually if you are adventurous and would like to try Emby Server running with .NET core instead of Mono, you can try a preview of that. corylorentz 3
Hey Luke, not really sure what to do with the folder contents from the link you sent... guess I'll wait for the next update. Why did you change the ability to play folder rips and add in the ffmpeg option. Things were working great before the latest update... other features to update are fine, but the ability to play files was working fine... not broke, why fix it? corylorentz 3
Hey Luke, so it looks like the issue of not being able to play folder rips has been resolved, however a new issue has popped up and I'm hoping you can provide some insight based on the log file below. Any movie I try to play will freeze at around the 20-22 minute mark and there is no way to make the movie resume, fast forward or reverse. Even starting the file again results in the same issue at the same time stamp. I've tried this with multiple movies on multiple devices. These files play fine as is when they're played through Kodi on my Mac Mini. Let me know what you think the issue might be... Luke 37064
Ok that just looks the same. Unfortunately you have to remember this feature of transcoding folder rips is only experimental, and it will not work with all titles. Have you considered converting to mkv video files? corylorentz 3
Luke - I know the playing of folder rips is experimental, but I’m wondering if there are plans to make this a feature of Emby. There was a time when folder rips played fine, before there was a necessary path to ffmpeg and ffprobe. My folder rips played all the way through, and now just about every movie stops playing at around the 21-22 minute mark. Seems as if the vob files are not able to continue sequentially. What other options are there at this point? Is there an alternative to ffmpeg? Can I install an older version of emby that worked better with folder rips? A version that did not require a path to ffmpeg? Will this older version of emby (if installled) work with all apps that try to access the server? Reformatting my collection to mkv is not an option... there’s over 1500 movies Thanks, Cory
Luke 37064
In order for that to happen, first we need ffmpeg to support them natively. Right now it doesn't support them natively and employing all kinds of workarounds to try and force it to do things it's not built to do.
corylorentz 3
Will an older version of emby, before the required ffmpeg path, work better?
corylorentz 3
Hey Luke - So, I've been searching for options to make this work the way that it used to when I first installed Emby... These folder rips played flawlessly, and now recently something has changed... I can't figure out if it's the Emby Server version or if it's the ffmpeg version? Again, I'm wondering if an older version of Emby or ffmpeg might work to help play folder rips... any ideas? Thanks, Cory
Luke 37064
I don't believe it should make a difference going back to an older version.
corylorentz 3
Okay, I will not attempt that as a solution. However, is there any explanation as to why this worked with DVD folder rips with previous versions and now none of my movies will make it past the 20 minute mark? Is there a way to ensure direct play at all all times from the server? I've tried to watch movies from the same mac that the server is on, Fire TV, and multiple iphones and ipads, and all seem to want to transcode... Luke 37064
I've already answered multiple times these devices do not natively support folder rips therefore you will not get direct play. If you want direct play, then either use emby theater desktop edition, or convert to mkv video files.
corylorentz 3
Luke - I will not attempt an older version as a solution, but I'm trying to comprehend how previous versions worked so well, and now with a few recent updates, I can't play any of my movies beyond the 20 minute mark, even movies that used to play all the way through. I looked over the transcoding logs and it mentions that the "current bitrate exceeds limit". Is there a way to force direct play and not have transcoding engage? I've tried playing movies from the web app on the same Mac that is also the Emby Server, I've also attempted playing movies on various Fire TV Devices, iPhones, iPads, etc. None of them can make it past this 20 minute mark... what changed with the different Emby versions to make this no longer work? Thanks, Cory
corylorentz 3
disregard my last post... I did not see my previous post actually posted.
Luke 37064
There is no way to force direct play for these on devices that cannot direct play them. That includes browsers, mobile devices, fire TV devices, etc. I don't know what the difference is from older versions I'm afraid. Again this is all expiremental. I only have one of each folder rip for testing (DVD, bd), and they seem to be fine. Keep in mind you will get better results from folder rips that only have one single vob or m2ts file. At this point given the low demand for these that's all the testing I'm able to give them. Certainly for video files we test with a much larger range of sample inputs.
