Android box recommendations

Looking for a recommendation for an android TV box to run emby.

The nvidia shield TV looks to be the best device on the market but it's too expensive for my needs. The Fire TV is great but I need something that supports refresh rate switching.

So I have four requirements

  1. Must support refresh rate switching with 1080p@24/50/60 outputs
  2. playback of h.264 high profile level 5.1
  3. play store support for installing and updating emby, I can't be bothered with any kind of side loading.
  4. ethernet - built in or reliable support for ethernet USB dongles.

Other than that I'm easy. I'm only going to be running emby so I'm not bothered about games or anything else. Ideally it should support CEC but I'm fine using my phone to remote control via the emby app.

Given your requirements, I don't know of anything other than the Shield that you would be happy with.

Maybe you can find a used first-gen model or something.

I think you are going to have frustration issues with anything else.

The Xaiomi Mi Box is the next closest... but I don't think it supports refresh rate switching.

Yes, but the OP was willing to live with USB Ethernet which should work just fine on Android 6.

I have a mibox w/ usb ethernet as well, paid like $20 for the adapter, works like a charm, and way better than the onboard wifi... granted I don't stream uncompressed bluray, otherwise bulletproof.
