SMB connection to NAS lost as soon as I try to play a movie

I am totally lost as I never experienced such an issue in the past with other versions of WIndows and MediaBrowser.

I am running a fresh installation of Windows 8.1 + all the Windows Update + latest versions of the drivers + latest version of MediaBrowser3 (client and server). Fresh installation = set up two days ago and I didn't install anything else, expect the K-Lite Codec pack Full...

When I boot Windows 8.1 and start a Windows Explorer, I can access my NAS using its UNC path without any issue: \\MyNAs\SomeSharedFolder

I can play a movie from any Shared Folder on the NAS, using MPC-HC. So far so good..

But as soon as I click "Play" on any movie within MediaBrowser3 Classic, I loose the connection to the NAS via SMB. I.e.: The movie does not start within MCE and if I try to browse the Shared Folders of my NAS with Windows Explorer, I get an error "Windows cannot access \\MyNas - Error Code 0x80070053 - The network path was not found".

I can still ping "MyNas" and get a positive response. It means that the netbios name is still resolved correctly.

I can still access the web administration interface of my nas via http://MyNas:5000/webman/index.cgi (its a Synology).

I can still browse the NAS via Windows Explorer using the same UNC path from another PC.

The only trick I found to restore the SMB connection is to disable and re-enable the Ethernet Adapter (= a reset without a reboot).

Does it ring a bell for anybody ???

Looking into the EventLog, I didn't see a lot of relevant notifications except possibly this one (which occurs soon after the issue described above):

That being said, I can reproduce the issue (Pressing Play does not start the movie and no access via SMB anymore via Windows Explorer), but I can't reproduce the eventlog entries here above...

What can I try to find the root cause of this issue or collect further evidences ?

Sounds pretty strange and really sounds like an issue at a lower level than us but, if you are using a plug-in theme, try it with chocolate or classic just to be sure.

Also, are you trying to play with the internal player or trying to launch MPC-HC as an external?

Post the MBC log in here when this happens.

I already tried with two other themes, including Chocolate and I couldn't start the movie with "Play" either...

I am using the internal player.

I wonder if it could be due to the fact that the account used to run the MB3 service is not the account used to access the NAS via Windows Explorer ?!

MB Service is running with a local user account XXX. XXX is granted full access on the shared folder of my NAS.

I am logged in Windows with a Microsoft account ZZZ. ZZZ has no access on the NAS.

And I did encode the Credentials of a user YYY to access the NAS with the ZZZ account (Once prompted to provide and memorize such credentials during the first access to a shared folder of the NAS). YYY is granted read access on the shared folder of the NAS.

Here attached are the log for today.. after waking up my HTPC, I did reboot it to be sure that I was starting from a clean situation.

I had a look in the logs and found that this message seems to be the one logged when I try to play a movie: Operation is not valid due to the current state of the object.

It just means it failed - probably because the share connection dropped in the process.

We can access the file just prior to attempting to play it.  Otherwise, we wouldn't even try.

Is the WMC DVD library also monitoring these same shares?  I saw something somewhere else where that was interfering with things.

No, I only use MB3...

I double checked, once more: If I am logged in windows, browse to the shared folder with Windows Explorer and open the video with MPC-HC, it runs fine. But as soon as I start MCE+MB3, I can't access the shared folder with Windows Explorer anymore...

So, indeed most probably an issue with the connection dropped while reading the file.

I found someone suggest to "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP which you set by going to"
- Network Sharing Center. - then pick Change Adapter Settings
- Then right Click the Network adapter you are using and pick Properties.
- Go to Internet Protocol Version 4, Click Properties
- Click advanced
- Select the WINS tab
- Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP by checking it instead of Default.

But it didn't help for me.

I tried next to run Media Center with another account (a brand new admin account never used before on that PC, but granted access rights on the NAS)... It's really weird as I have been able to start ONE movie... But next, none anymore (even the one played didn't ever replay - including after a restart of Media Center)... Here attached is the related log.

Hi @@vletroye I could be way off here but I've had some network issues at work when IPv6 is enabled. Like you did above, go to the adapter properties and untick IPv6. Worth a shot!

Cheers

Thx you both Atchmor and

IPV6 is already disabled, as I do on all my PC... I will check again all the properties of the Ethernet adapter as it sounds indeed like the problem is there.

I did try yet with a local account instead of a Microsoft account, but I will try now with the IP address instead of the netbios name. It sounds also like a good tip !

I have flushed my dns cache and I have no problem anymore to access the NAS after starting a movie which fails to play.

Regarding movies failing to play: I quickly found that this was an issue with the configuration of the codec as I was also unable to play those movies via an "Open With : Windows Media Center".

Sorry for that stupid mistake :/

[EDIT]  It didn't solve completely my issue... I still can't play many movies with MB3 although I can play them using the "Open With" > " Windows Media Center" context menu of Windows Explorer.

???

I finally figured out that MB3 Classic was only working 100% when run with the same account as the MB3 Server part (this account is granted full access on the NAS where the movies are stored).

If I run MB3 Classic with another account (E.g.: I am logged with another local account or Microsoft account), then I can play only a few* movies. And as soon as a movie can't be played, I can play no movie anymore (I sounds mad, I know)

* I really don't understand the logic... Could it be that I can only play movies requiring transcoding?

I thought that MB3 Classic was accessing the MB3 Server (run as a service on my HTPC)  to get the video stream ???

But it seems that in most cases, the server just passes the UNC path of the movie to MB3 Classic.
When this one is not running with an account granted access on the NAS, it fails to play the movies...

Someone could confirm my understanding ?

Correct.  MBC directly plays your content.  It does not pass it through the server.  This is why it is documented all over the place to use UNC paths to define your library.  However, you can now use the new "Path Substitution" feature to accomplish the same goal.

In short, the MBC program must have direct access to the media locations.

Thx a lot for confirmation!

Fixing this, I was almost done... Only still had one user account not able to play movies (the one with MCE+MB3 configured as a windows shell replacement). And I did solve the problem by deleting this account and recreating a new one with adhoc access rights on the NAS.. But that was still not enough to be able to play all movies (Open With 'Windows Media Center' was still not working)...  I had to start a windows session with that account (disabling temporarily the Custom User Interface in the Group Policy) to reset and reconfigured the codecs (via K-Lite Codec Pack configuration tool).

Now, everything runs fine with all my user accounts - 'admin' or 'user' - 'local' or 'Microsoft' - with a standard shell (Windows Explorer) or with Windows Media Center as a shell) - and with a password or not (as far as the same user/(blank)password exists on the NAS with adhoc access on the shared folders OR as far as I have configured adhoc credentials for the user via its Credentials Manager).

I am an happy dad with happy kids  :P

Thx for this great suite of software !

Yesterday, after booting, I noticed that it was not working anymore for mkv : "Play" did not work with any account anymore (it was doing nothing) and I could not "open with Windows Media Center" any mkv either. I could still play mkv with MPC-HC without any problem....

I thought that the problem was back and did remove the codec+filter installed previously to install Win7codecs for Shark007.net instead

I did used those on my previous HTPC and never had any issue to play movies with MB3 within MCE...

And indeed, once reconfigured with my favorite settings, as I always did in the past (language = fre, subtitle = fre, ...), the problem disappeared :P

Happy, I did reboot and log in with an account for which MB3 classic is configured as a Custom User Interface.

And... AGAIN, not able to play mkv anymore :(

I did press "Exit" several times on my remote to go back to the home screen of Media Center.

After answering "Yes" to MB3's message "Are you sure you wish to exit?", I did re-enter MB3.

AND I was NOW able to play mkv !!??!!??

As this sounded quite crazy, I did reboot several times to validate my finding... and notice the same behavior each time.

So, the trick is: enter MB3, exit MB3 (but stay within Media Center) and re-enter MB3...

Suddenly, I noticed that I had French subtitles (which I don't need as I am a native French speaker).

So, I did change the settings of LAV's splitter to only displayed forced subs (and clicked "Apply").

As the change didn't apply immediately, I had to reboot... reboot to apply changes on the codec ? Titl !

It means that each time I thought MB3 was able to play a movie and changed some settings in the codec without a reboot, the settings were not applied.

I am now convinced that there is some settings I am used to configure in the codec that are not perfectly supported by Media Center...

So, I did reset the suggested settings of skark007 and didn't change anything now (except LAv's settings language = fre + only forced subs fre)...

Once rebooted, I entered MB3 and WAS ABLE to play the movie immediately (without the need to exit MB3 and re-enter).

I cross my finger and hope it will stay like that...

During my experiment around which setting could be the root cause, I had the feeling that the problem could be related with the use of "ffdshow DXVA" for the "subtitle control". But changing the settings one by one and rebooting is not a easy process. In addition, I have to change the settings both in the "x86 settings" and "x64 add-on" of shark007 as I am not sure which one is used (some are only defined in "x86 settings")
