As Carlos has said, the percentage is low because there's no reason to add hardware with these capabilities...

The typical reason to add more capable hardware is to enable more parallel transcodings. But only a small percentage does so (needs this).
What's wrong about this is the false assumption that a broad range of Emby users would spend that amount of money if it would be there. And then there's still the limited client support.

But I don't want argue further in that direction - I think everything has been said already. Instead I want to provide some insights for those who are projecting their own high-end hardware setups or plans as an assumption on the average Emby user setups.

First of all, you need consider that a large amount of Emby installations are on NAS devices. Those devices don't have the latest CPU generations and often it's not even possible to install a discrete GPU card. But it's not only on those devices, similar can be observed on Linux and Windows installations: The majority is using Emby on hardware which is (of course not 15y) from something like 3-8 years ago (released).

For the range of the past two years, I have 1837 ffmpeg logs from user support cases. Of course this doesn't allow to create any representative statistics, because it's distorted in many ways (e.g. one user posts 1 log, another posts 10 logs and other factors). That's why I don't even want to give any numbers.

Instead I'll show you two lists, so you can get a rough impression about which hardware is used with Emby. In each list, one line represents one log file. Means that I grepped the first line from all matching logs (of those 1837). Then I cleaned the lines (removing leading and trailing chars) to have only the model names remaining, Finally the lines were sorted.

Hi softworkz,  if you think as an Emby user,   why do we bother to upgrade the hardware if emby do not support the new codec(like AV1)?

Nobody said you should  upgrade your hardware..

Think trott90 tried to say why should we upgrade as long as you emby dosn't support it! Even though we WANT too :)

Probably very little from either as most people opt for the 'Lifetime Emby Premiere plan'. Although some do choose the monthly/annual plan to help support the dev. team.

In such case some new monetization schemes could be implemented, like funded features - if feature are not in a roadmap, but users could fund(aka force) it implementation. For each release cycle, could be available one or two slots for funded features.

I've always liked this model when done "correctly". By that I mean a company opens up a portion of development time to monetized backing of specific features. Perhaps 75 to 80% of development is still company driven which is from their ideas or from user requests in the forums, basically how things are now, while 20% to 25% of development is purely based on monetized funding of specific feature requests.Obviously, any feature added would need to be a benefit in some way to Emby/users and will not hurt the product in any way. Over the years there have been some requests that make a ton of sense to add but would only be truly useful to larger systems in an initial implementation. Being able to get a half dozen to dozen other power users on board with the idea knowing we could pull together and pay a little to get that "killer" feature that makes our life easier would be great.

My frank concern for the development of Emby is that the powers that be simply want a bigger piece of a smaller pie.  I have no idea of what their revenue stream is, or what their market/business potential may be.  From a resources standpoint, they seem to be in need of additional developers and possibly even product managers, however bringing those resources in will dilute revenue.  On the other hand, who knows how much opportunity cost the developers of Emby have experienced due to a lack of execution.  As a user who goes back to the MB days, I sincerely wish them continued success, and continue to use the product stack as the alternatives leave too much to be desired (IMO).  Still, there are a lot of QoL and long-standing execution issues that can be frustrating.

No, you don't have to wait 10 years, but we do need to consider how reliable it's going to be, and how many people will actually want to use it given the CPU requirements. Just like any other feature request, we want to see what kind of audience it will have before committing to the work.

Almost there! Only 3 and a half more years guys :D

But serious now, dont you think its time to get this "Killer" feature now? Mark it as "Experimental" or hide it in a "Expert" section to enable, in case is would confuse ppl (tbh we are all enthusiast here, be real! We know what we are doing/looking for, even IF, thats a big if, ppl get problems with this feature, it would be the minority... )

Its about time to get H.265 as Transcode option, since the new Codec AV1 is already getting supported and with that pretty much any device since 2020 (Wild guess) supports H.265.

Something funny here, I saw the question in this thread: "Why do ppl use Emby instead of JllyFin, when they can support feature like that?"

Simple Answer: JellyFin got NO Apps on all divices like Emby does, other wise no one would use Emby! <- My opinion.

Also finding my self in dire need of this feature to trancscode and stream in h265 while traveling on holidays or for work. While in limited connectivity camping as well as it’s becoming more and more evident that places and provides are using limiting practices for bandwidth.

lets take for example a family of 2-4 trying to stream from a regular Australian connection where bandwidth is limited to only 20mbps upload not to mention that most hotels have a 5-10 mbps download limit it’s quite hard to get anything decent quality wise out of 264 without buffer moments.

Been a long time premium member of emby and would love to see this feature finally become available as a server side setting or even as the prefrance and fail back to h264 if client device isn’t compatible for decode.

love your product and support guys just want to push my preference for this feature.

Hi.  You are making a large assumption that this feature will solve your bandwidth problem.  There is a discussion earlier in this thread on why on the fly transcoding is not necessarily going to do that for you.

In your case, it would likely be much more effective for you to use the conversion features of Emby server to create "roaming friendly" versions of your content if that is a common case for you.

Hello and thank you for the reply.

I'm making no assumptions at all for someone that has hardware to spare in terms of compute power and limited space availability it makes very little sences to keep a redundant copy of the exact same movie for streaming purposes consistently using space for only being used a few times a year it seems for me at least a very obsolete solution.

It make far more sense to be able to utilise my 3090 or 5960wx horse power for on the fly transcoding.

Why not have both options as most igpus these days transcode to h265 very efficantly.

It is the exact solution that every major streaming provider uses.

Again, you are making an assumption that this process would solve your problem.  There is discussion on this already in this thread.

Guess ppl need to preencode in h265 if they really want it.

I already do using Tdarr.

So if h265 is the solution they so desperately need,

the real question is why don't they pre-transcode there media ?

Probably because some of us have over 100tb of media and it would literally take years and cost thousands of dollars in cooling and electricity bills

I guess for me is that I don't trust the re-encoding part and the potential it may actually degrade quality or how it works with emby when it replaces the files but its something I will look into eventually.

I guess for me is that I don't trust the re-encoding part and the potential it may actually degrade quality or how it works with emby when it replaces the files but its something I will look into eventually.

it's playing around with the FFmpeg settings, really... I've been doing it for years and I don't notice any difference on my devices, which range from Samsung Galaxy phones to iPads to 65" 4k TVs...

I've put together a PowerShell script with various options for it, based on something Penkethboy wrote years ago:

sorry, but unless you have seeing problems, this just is not true. you may be happy with the trade off of size for quality but, even with compression done by the scene, it is 100% clear that a video has been compressed. the blacks look blocky every single time

then maybe I should make an appointment with an ophthalmologist 🙂

Either way, I'm talking about downloaded content, most of which is compressed already anyway and it's not uncompressed quality in the first place... I don't disagree with you when talking about UHD Bluray quality compared to a h265 compression, but for stuff that comes from the web, I really don't notice a difference even playing side by side on a 4k monitor in VLC...

ok - agree with all this with the qualification

For me it's the premise of a 100% guarantee to burn compute/GPU cycles to change the videos I want in to save disk space and skipping on-the-fly transcoding in exchange for those rare situations where I need something at a lower bitrate and might not have the required resources to do on-the-fly transcoding down the road...I'd rather save the compute cycles, buy more storage, and trust that hardware transcoding will be there if I need it.
