Kodi suddenly not connecting to server

Hi there,

I have a strange problem over the last 3 days where Kodi (windows) doesn't find my Emby server.  I haven't changed anything in my configuration, though I did try restarting my router to see if that would help.

Since it doesn't connect to the Emby, Kodi will then hang on exit and I have to go to Task Manager to quit.

I changed Emby for Kodi's log to 'info' and will attach both the Kodi and Emby Server logs.

Thanks for your help!

No. that is just a snippet of a server log so it's hard to really tell much from that.

Sounds like something network related is going on, I would suggest he tries connecting to Emby server manually by entering the server ip address.

The strange part is that the plugin has always been configured to connect manually by ip address.  I tried force quitting+restarting Kodi many times, and the server will actually connect every once in a while (about 1 out of every 15 attempts).

btw relating to the other person who replied, this started when I was still on Kodi 17.1 (updating to 17.2 & 17.3 did not make any difference).

If there's a more detailed log I can provide, just let me know what you need and I will do it.  Is there anything else I can try without uninstalling/reinstalling the plugin?

Hi Guys,

I've got the same problem at about the same time.

Got 2 Kodi devices and both having the same problem.

One Kodi device is 17.3 and the other 16.1.

I don't know what has changed, the network connection is fine.

It looks like the problem is the connection to the Kodi emby add-on servers, because when I try to update/reinstall the add-on, sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't.

Anyone has a solution? :(

Yep, I too am all of the sudden having the same issue.  With stable v2.3.48 on various FireTV devices all using Kodi 16.1

Other odd thing is for one device I am trying to use "Reset local Kodi database" which helped with another device having issues, but when I select it on another device it won't even go thru the reset.  So what I mean is that it won't even pop up the next dialog box (the "Do you really want to reset..." thing).

Very odd.

I've got the exact same issue. No issues with The plugin on my local network connected devices, but no devices using Kodi and the Emby plugin will sync outside of my house. It just tells me unable to connect with server when I try to manually setup the plugin again, which has been my setup to begin with. I'll get my logs and post them up here when I have a chance. I have also gone through my firewall at the house just to make sure nothing has changed with regards to port forwarding and everything is still set as it should be.

Can anyone who experience this issue disable the fast sync server plugin and let me know if it resolves the login issue?

Maybe I have to set it to debug mode.
There is no error at all. But there is no connection with the emby server.
I don't think this is very useful. Let me know what I can do to help sort this out.

Got hit by this too on two different machines which worked fine, one of which is the same as the server. Nothing changed on either of them. They were both running 17.1. Updating to 17.3 made no difference.

I presume the devs reproduced it given there were no more replies since May 31 (or not?). Is there a fix?

Argh, the emby server logs have a ton of private/sensitive info ... will take a while to sanitize.

The fact of the matter is that kodi not only doesn't connect, i also no longer can open the emby plugin settings in kodi. This must be linked to an Emby update. Where can I download an older Emby version to try? Like the one 6 days ago. EDIT: found it. Will try and report back later.

Ok, reverting the server to 3.2.17 didn't help at all. Same problem. Will try to revert the plugin, though the 2.3.48 plugin was installed back in early May and worked fine until today. I see nothing suspicious in the server logs. The Kodi logs however show this as the very last entries - it's also where Emby is first mentioned (Kodi is currently stuck trying to open the EMby plugin settings). I note that I can connect and play from a browser just fine.

I can't think of anything, so, can you check that there is a data.txt file within your userdata/addon_data/plugin.video.emby?

Is there a specific error message that comes up? What exactly happens on screen? thanks.

What's supposed to be next in the log is loading the credentials I believe. But that seems to be missing from what I see. I don't see what could be the issue, but we'll see once somebody replies to my previous question.

Yes, there is. It contains a json that looks exactly like the one in the log. Here it is sanitized:

{"Servers": [{"Name": "MACHINE", "AccessToken": "ae8d6ecf468a42abb7a4cf5954fd9f3a", "RemoteAddress": "http://host.example.com:8096", "UserId": "e58f615a43264f2a8c2f84a6e66f2b6f", "WakeOnLanInfos": [{"MacAddress": "F8-16-54-DB-B2-27"}], "LocalAddress": "http://192.168.1.2:8096", "DateLastAccessed": "2017-06-06T21:48:32Z", "LastConnectionMode": 2, "Id": "dadbd771da044eb6ab9ad9a708476fc0", "Users": [{"IsSignedInOffline": true, "Id": "e58f615a43264f2a8c2f84a6e66f2b6f"}]}]}

When I try to access the EMby add-on settings in kodi, the following lines are added in the kodi log:

03:16:40.756 T:6052   ERROR: XFILE::CDirectory::GetDirectory - Error getting plugin://plugin.video.emby/?mode=settings
03:16:40.758 T:6052   ERROR: CGUIMediaWindow::GetDirectory(plugin://plugin.video.emby/?mode=settings) failed

Is there a specific error message that comes up? What exactly happens on screen? thanks.

- kodi starts

- the emby successful login message does not pop up (it usually pops up after a few seconds in the upper corner)

- trying to open the Emby add-on settings results in a perpetually loading icon (spinning disc)

- I have to press Esc to get back to the main Kodi screen

- I can use Kodi's other features apart from the Emby ones (e.g. I can play local files via Videos and)

If I try using the browser (Chrome) from the same machine, same server, no changes whatsoever, it works just fine ...

Also rebooted both server and client.

I'm stumped ...

This looks suspicious. Is there some kind of compatibility issue introduced in newer versions of the add-on or kodi?

The add-on version 2.3.48 was updated in early May in my case (no updated since then), and it *has* worked fine until 3 days ago. Given I also reverted the server to 3.2.17 when everything was working then I'm stumped ... unless the plugin or Emby calls home. Do they?

@@Angelblue05 what do you think could be the issue?

This sounds very similar to a problem I recently experienced.  Out of curiosity, do any other plug-ins you have installed work?  A few weeks ago I noticed that the Emby login message was not popping up.  In addition, the live-tv channel message that usually popups when channels are scanned did not appear.  The LibreELEC settings addon did not work either.  I tried to access a few other program addons and they were also non-responsive.

Through trial and error I found that if I disabled the main Emby addon and rebooted the system, all the other addons functioned as usual at startup and at every subsequent reboot.  If I reenabled the Emby addon, the emby login screen would popup and the database would be updated.  It would function perfectly for the entire session.  But after a system reboot, Emby and other plugins were back to not working.  The only way to get things working again was to disable Emby, reboot, and reenable Emby.

Unfortunately for me, I assumed the issue was related to a corrupt SD card.  So I bought a new one and reinstalled everything.  I no longer have the original installation to test any fixes that get recommended in this thread.
