Hi everyone- I'm nearly ready to push the button on an NVIDIA Shield but the remote worries me. I'm used to a full Windows Media Center remote and i cant even see FF and RW on the stock shield one. Do any Shield users use an alternative remote?

I have the Harmony remote with the Harmony hub. While there is a fwd and rwd button on the remote, I haven't found many apps other than Kodi that use that button. The Emby App works best with the skip forward/backwards function (using the OSD buttons).

Most of these devices are moving towards fewer button commands.

I use a harmony smart remote setup using bluetooth rather than IR because my Plasma TV throws off some IR interference that messes with IR remotes. The Shield is somewhat limited in commands that is accepts, what you see on the offical remote is pretty much what you get. With the harmony remote you can map buttons as keyboard presses which can be usefull for apps like Kodi that were designed with keyboard input in mind. The Emby app on the other hand was designed with a simple remote in mind so there is not value to a remote with a bunch of extra buttons. As for FF RW, the arrows keys provide that function.

If you plan to use the Emby app for Android TV the stock remote it more than fine. If you want to use Kodi with the Emby for Kodi plugin a remote like the Harmony smart remote is nice you mapping those extra buttons.

That's good - it sounds like there a few options.

Does the Shield work well with Emby generally?

Very well. Everyone has their favorite clients but it is generally agreed upon that the Android TV app is one of if not the best Emby clients especially on the Shield TV hardware.

It is quick, looks nice, and direct plays just about everything.

Use the one that comes with it. It has everything that you need on it.

Are you getting the 2017 model? 16Gb or 500Gb

The ATV app is excellent, but if you want to use Kodi and the Emby for Kodi addon, then that works fine too.

The one I looked at was the 16gb 2017 model. Just hoping it passes the Wife Acceptance Factor!

We have 3 Shields at home and they're very easy to use.

Where in the UK are you ?? If we're close by, then you're more than welcome to come and see Emby on mine.

That would be ideal. I'm just outside Newcastle. Where are You?

The other end of the country I'm afraid :)

Balls!! Do you use it as your main way of watching and recording live tv?

Yes, but not so much Live TV.

Perhaps @@Spaceboy and/or @@maegibbons could comment, as they use it a lot more than me.

What Live TV provider do you use ??

HDHomerun using the native Emby / Schedules Direct service.

That'll work well on the Shield.

I have one, plus IPTV :)

Yes

I have HDHomerun and predominantly use Fire TV and Mi Xiaomi ATV box.

I also believe that the F/ATV client for emby is the best.

I like the Fire TV because it has Forward/Rewind buttons

Great - do the FF & RW buttons work in Emby or do you have to use the D Pad skip? Does the menu or home button do anything?

Yes - they work in emby.  The Menu button does work - brings up the guide in Live TV etc.

Fire TV is a good device and comparatively cheap.

Brilliant - I'll probably get one of those then!

I have a Fire TV (gen 1), but I prefer the Shield TV's.

You still can't actually FF/RW on either.

When you do, playback jumps forward 30s or back 10s.

Each to their own though :D

Of course - i use the MI Xiomai daily too (Bedroom) - no ff/rw buttons - so can do it both ways - I have the skills!!!

BUT I do like the buttons on the fire!  :P

Apparently you can buy the replacement Fire TV remotes and pair them with the Shield. Maybe this will give me the best of both worlds.
