Most websites/services now let you use your email address as login, it makes it easier for users to not have to remember a separate username. I think all you need to do is allow @ as an allowed symbol. Duane May or may not work for your particular application but will if these users are remote and single per device - you could use Emby Connect which will allow validation with an email address.
