I am thinking of moving all of my media to something like the WD My Cloud. Who uses devices like this and what are your recommendations?

Network attached storage (NAS) [Ethernet] - good upto full drive speed on gigabit lan 110-160 MB/s

USB 2.0 attached network storage - meh. 23-30 MB/s

USB 3.0 attached network storage - better, can be as good as ethernet.

or a NAS bay storage, is up-gradable (add drives) and most support raid as well (data backup using multiple drives)

the mybook series drives are good, i had one setup for my dad, easy to setup shares that work with MB no problem.

I certainly would not use a cloud storage provider for my video collection.  The need for large amounts of storage and reliably high transfer rates on the cloud end means high costs.  On the ISP side I would needstable, fast service and the possibility of playing merry hell with transfer caps from the same ISP make it a poor option for me.  Your mileage may vary.

Lots of folks use NAS drive bays and they are a great solution but not cheap.  I'm cheap. :)  I just shoved 4-5 HDDs in my server's case.  When I run low on space I replace the smallest drive in the case with whatever the largest thing on the market is and retire the old drive to the pool I use to make backups of my rips.

Try http://www.ownCloud.com ;)

They may have fixed the issue by now, but a couple of years ago there were issues using owncloud with large files. Just something to look into...

With MB Server - you basically can create your own cloud storage for your media.  The media is local to your server, but available through the "cloud" when you are away.

Unless you didn't have that much of it and it was all compressed for streaming across the net, I can't imagine using actual cloud storage for your own media would be very effective.

yea and now that live tv is done, content syncing will be the next big thing. both in terms of syncing to devices and also to the cloud.

Yes as EBR is describing, I can access my collection, from my phone, over data or wifi, from my server at home.

All you need is your home server to be turned on, and set a few settings.  Gives your media the cloud feeling without any extra hardware or cost.

***only issue is bandwidth...  you will need 300kb/s upload speed for SD content and upto 2 MB/s upload for low end HD content. bluray quality is out of the question unless you have upto or above 19 MB/s upload and download on other end.

and those speeds are MegaBytes, not the MegaBit crap numbers your ISP sells you. divide by 8 (10 for realistic)

I think the original poster is referring to Western Digital's My Cloud line. These are 1-6 TB drives that you plug into the network and turn on for storage. They also have a couple of cases that hold up to four drives each for 12-16 Terabytes of storage.

The only downside to these pre-packaged drives is they are more difficult to service and replace. Plus you're paying the cost of a terabyte or more for the case. If you don't have a system where you can put 4-5 drives and call it a NAS though, they might be cheaper in the short run. Long run, you'll want a machine you can use to handle more storage space to handle 8, 10, 12 or more drives. I know my current case can hold 8 drives total and I will need an expansion card for four of those.

Hi

dont waste your time with WD my Cloud , the cloud is just a term to use anything can be used to be access from outside of your home can be called Cloud :)

MB3 is your cloud as everybody said my advise is to get Synology DS1513+ Network Storage or get Mediasonic HF2-SU3S2 3.5" Black SATA I/II/III USB3.0 & eSATA 4 Bay External Enclosure with

SYBA SD-SA2PEX-2E PCI-Express x1 SATA II (3.0Gb/s) Controller Card

Good luck

Thanks for the suggestions, but none of that is really in my budget.

Perhaps the better question is this: I need to expand my storage. Considering my budget is directly tied to WAF, what is the best route? NAS, External HDD, Internal HDD?

If you have connections in your box, internal bare hard drives are the most budget friendly. You can get a 4 terabyte Western Digital Red Drive for the price of a 3 Terabyte Western Digital My Cloud drive.

if your computer has an empty SATA 2 port inside on the motherboard, and a spot to put in another drive above or below your current harddrive (or lay on the bottom of case if brave) , buy an internal harddrive.

back to post 2....

if you have no room inside your case for another drive, go with an Ethernet connected external drive (NAS drive)

if you dont have a spare ethernet port on your router, go with a USB 3.0 external drive (your PC needs BLUE USB ports), lastly if no USB 3.0 ports, buy it anyway, it will work at usb 2.0 speed with the same cable on usb 2.0 computers, and if you ever upgrade the pc, you have a usb 3.0 drive, or can dismantle the external drive, repartition the drive, then install it as an internal.

Ah, yes.  My mistake.

What a stupid name for an external storage device...

actually the mycloud drive series, comes with firmware/software to make the drive available over the internet, making it an actual 'cloud' drive.

My dad was running his MB collection off a 3tb my cloud drive, until i built his new ht/gamingPC, then we disassembled the my cloud drive, re-partitoned it and installed it as his new movies drive.

I bought the drive, set it up, filled it then shipped it to him originally. got to play with the firmware setup options. 110-130 MB/s transfer rate on gigabit lan. nice drive actually.

Okay, that makes a little more sense but certainly not needed for a MB application since we provide the "cloud" services.

speaking of which, ive been playing with android and remote library viewing, I see how webUI would work, as both those have transcoding available... but is there a way to use MBC or MBT remotely with content in which is a higher bitrate than bandwidth size? ei any form of transcoding larger material to a smaller stream?

some blueray quality mkv files are 15-19 MB/s, i cant upload that quick!! lol

We have not been successful getting any of our transcoded streams to play in WMC so MBC has all streaming (other than trailers) disabled right now.
