MB3 App Freezes When Subtitles Turned On

With the 1.2.0.30 version, when I play a video stream that has subtitles included, the video plays fine when subtitles are not displayed. However, if I use the App to turn them on (via the subtitles button at the bottom of the screen), then the video displays them, plays for a fraction of a second, and stops. Pressing Play again causes the frame to repeat, and playback then stops again.

I've tried to capture a log, but once I pressed clear logs to start with a fresh slate, no new logs seem to get created in the MB3 App. Here at least is the server log:

This is happening on two instances of the MB3 App. One installed on my Desktop PC, and one installed on my Tablet - both running Windows 8.1 Pro (64bits on the Desktop, 32bits on the Tablet)

Ya it is but I would like one single playback event if you can please. It will make it a little easier for me the track the sequence.

If you could start playback, turn on subs only and give me all the relevant logs

More info here if you need it

Edit: I will also need debug logging turned on

Right, I turned on debug logging and transcoding logging. I then attempted to repeat the playback of the same file and turn on the subs. However, this time, the playback started and then stopped after a couple of seconds before I had a chance to reach for the subs button. I tried it again, and the same thing - playback stopped after a couple of seconds.

The section of the server log is here: http://paste2.org/8cDBmmKM

The MB3 browser reports that the video file is:

Video:MPEG2VIDEO • 720x576 • 16:9 • 5675 kbps
Audio:eng • AC3 • stereo • 192 kbps • Default
Subtitle:eng • DVDSUB • Default

7illusions

What happens if you seek a minute or two forward in the video once the playback stops, does that bring it up again?

Hmm not to sure what is happening with this the response time is very slow (Response time: 4337.1614 ms)(first log)

If you could please turn off ffmpeg debug and just leave the server debug.

OK, I turned off transcoding debugging, restarted the server and waited until the scan Media Library task had completed. Then I played back the video file, and turned on subs. The video froze. Following 7illusions suggestion, I went forward a minute or two in the video, The video started playing (with some buffering going on and reduced playback speed several times), but without the subtitles.

Thanks for helping with this I know it can be a laborious task.

Can you link the ffmpeg logs please?

Overlaying the subs onto the video is quite cpu intensive (its basically running two video streams into one) what cpu are you running?

Answer to 7illusion: No, same thing occurs. I turn the subs on, the video freezes, and pressing play just plays one frame(?) with the subs on before it freezes again.

Answer to Tikuf: The CPU is a low power one. That could be the issue... It's an AMD Athlon X2 5050e. I've never had to bother with on-the-fly transcoding before now. Media Center with MyMovies has handled everything without problems using DVDs ripped to VIDEO_TS folders and BluRays ripped to ISOs...

Ok it looks to be converting fast enough without the subs in both the dash and the app can you try the dash with subs and post a log please

Server log: http://paste2.org/FUeZHba7

ffmpeg log 1: http://paste2.org/N9UcEGDz

ffmpeg log 2: http://paste2.org/gG6YGGXP

That was using the dash to select the episode, start playing in the browser video player, and selecting the subs as fast as I was able. I didn't see how it was possible to set the subs on first without setting the video playing.

The video froze immediately.

What browser were you using? IE?  I wanted to try and isolate the mp4 that we are using and try a different codec like webm do you have access to chrome?

IE. I'll try Chrome later today (got something else to attend to first). One thing, I can play the video in MB3 Classic in WMC. The subtitles show by default (I haven't found how to switch them off, either)...

OK, I tried Chrome, and here I was able to switch on the subtitles with no problem. I can't see how to turn them off again, but that's a separate issue...

I just noticed Luke has just committed the turn subs off code so it will be in the next release.

I have tested the mp4 c/l and uri outside mb and it all works fine so I am still not sure why it isn't for you. The fact that the dash behaves as expected narrows it down a little. It looks like the rt is rejecting the stream for one reason or another (I have no way to determine what it doesn't like). You can try upping the bitrate a little although I dont expect it to make a heap of difference.

We have some changes coming to the server shortly which I am hoping will help out some with ms devices.

Hang tight we will find a solution. I just hit a brick wall as to how we can narrow it down more.

I also have the same issue. I have both server and client on the same machine. I'm guessing the movie (an mkv) is getting transcoded. Is it not possible to just play the movie directly without the all the extra processing? I had the same issue with Plex which ended up being useless to me. I'm getting a feeling of déjà vu.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just bought MediaBrowser off the Windows Store and am experiencing some subtitle related issues as well.

Playing a 480p mkv anime with subtitles would play fine, but skipping forward would disable them.

Playing a 720p mkv anime with subtitles would exhibit the same problems as the OP (it would display for about a second, and then the video may freeze or refuse to play back. Skipping ahead may just disable the subtitles.

I opened both files in mkvmerge and the subtitle streams appeared to be of the same type (under attachments, .ttf files, I presume?).

And finally, the really weird thing about the 480p mkv anime: playing without the subtitles, it looks like the video playback doesn't take up the whole screensize... there are black vertical bands (not more than 25 pixels on each side, I'm estimating) that results in a slight video distortion. Ironically, turning on the subtitles fixes this. The 720p mkv by default doesn't have this banding problem. I'm not sure if it's related, but it seems pretty coincidental.

Anyways, let me know if there's anything else I can provide that may help.

Edit: Also transcoding is extremely cpu intensive. I have a Core2-E6300, and CPU utilization is around 60-70% transcoding these. I'll be in the process of upgrading to a Haswell based storage server to see if it resolves this.

Burning in the subs is more intensive on the cpu. Likely to be the issue with the 720p and the e6300. Improvements are coming.
