lorac 100
I have a roku 4 premiere+ and when I'm using a local user account at a remote location most files still direct stream however if I then switch to an emby connect user those same files transcode. logs.zip
Happy2Play 8319
Looks to me, it is because of the Subtitles. As the one that is remuxed doesn't appear be using subtitles. Stream mapping: Stream #0:0 (hevc) -> overlay:main (graph 0) Stream #0:4 (dvdsub) -> scale (graph 0) scale (graph 0) -> Stream #0:0 (h264_qsv) Stream #0:1 -> #0:1 (aac (native) -> aac (native)) Edited December 30, 2016 by Happy2Play
Happy2Play 8319
Might consider adding network share paths also.
Luke 37132
Hi @@lorac, @@Happy2Play is exactly right. The roku does not support dvdsub format subtitles, so when those subtitles are selected, transcoding will be needed.
lorac 100
OK but I'm not doing anything different between the two users. The ROKU / EMBY is deciding to play those subtitles by default for guests but not users. Perhaps I might have a different result in the official emby app as opposed to Blue Neon. I'll add the network paths but they should have been there from the old way of adding those.
Luke 37132
Perhaps the default language and subtitles preferences for the two users should be reviewed.

lorac 100
They are the same. English and Smart. I really don't see any difference between the two apart from one is a guest and the other is a user. I added network paths but that didn't change anything. Not sure if a full library scan would be needed but I wouldn't think so. Official emby app does the same thing.
lorac 100
@@Happy2Play I checked their profiles on the server and didn't see any difference. Very few people are going to bother changing their defaults if they even know how.
Luke 37132
the server will also remember track selections so if it was selected at some point then that would explain it. it is one of those two.
Luke 37132
Additionally, while I didn't review every log in the zip, one that i did check out showed a video with PGS subtitles that are marked as default. So generally they would be enabled.

Luke 37132
The subtitle track is marked by default, so out of the box you may need to change user subtitle settings if you don't want that track to play
lorac 100
So bringing this back up... I understand that emby doesn't support a variety of subtitles which is why I have the server look for srt files. So as an example I have Monty Python's Flying Circus - S01E01 - Whither Canada_ [x264 AAC] [1969-10-05].eng.srt and Monty Python's Flying Circus - S01E01 - Whither Canada_ [x264 AAC] [1969-10-05].mkv I thought the point of getting SRT subtitles was so that transcoding wasn't needed? transcode.zip

You're playing from Roku. Roku does not support DVB subtitles, therefore the only way to play these subtitles is by burning them in with transcoding. In this log you have the DVB subtitles selected. If you select the external SRT track, then it shouldn't transcode. Were you not aware which subtitle track was selected? We need to learn why you thought something was wrong. Thanks. lorac 100
I didn't select any subtitle track and I doubt the person playing the video selected a subtitle track. More than likely they select what they want to play and play it... It isn't as if they would need subtitles. In fact in the emby app there's no option to select subtitles Sent from my STV100-3 using Tapatalk

Yes it can handle eac3, but remember, if using an optical audio cable, optical audio cables don't support eac3. it's possible the Roku support for eac3 might vary by model, @@ebr can elaborate, but you can also refer to our wiki page for the Roku app which lists direct play formats: https://github.com/MediaBrowser/Wiki/wiki/Roku Please let us know if this helps. lorac 100
You could always set them to no subtitles if that's what you want.To me it's more of why do default settings cause transcoding. I'm not against subtitles or transcoding if that needs to happen. Emby is smart enough to know it doesn't have to transcode if the defaults are setup that way. I can go in and adjust every user but I shouldn't need to. Ie. Subtitle Mode should be smart by default. I'm not aware of a global setting that would enable this for new users or allow one to change it for everyone. Luke 37132
It's a no win situation unfortunately. If we did that there would be just as many people saying where are my subtitles. That's why we have the preferences so that this can be controlled.
lorac 100
Well if you say so. I would think that the smart option by default would be good. At least have an option to setup users with certain subtitle options by default. Something within the initial setup of the server / user creation itself. You can't win but I'm sure there are ways to make it simpler. You're the programming God though so I'll leave it up to you...
