Recuva for Secure Erase

Has anyone used the Recuva software before?

I installed it a couple of years ago on my media server after I accidentally deleted a 35GB folder containing several seasons of the TV show I wanted to keep and because it was obviously far larger than my recycle bin.

In that instance I was able to recover 90% of the files and only needed to replace 4GB.

But it's got a secure erase function built in and I was gonna see if it would wipe the drive that's failing, as I've just replaced it... Never actually used a secure erase program before.

Also concerned that if the drive is already failing, trying to run a secure erase on it might make it worse.

I have a file box of old hard drives squirrelled away, never to be used again. Nothing on them that the FBI would care about and if a robber wants to break in and steal them and recover data from formatted drives that's a risk I'm willing to take.
