So Emby just deleted a whole bunch of stuff

Decided to try Emby out after Plex started to have a bunch of issues after the latest update. Uninstalled plex and so on, and went to download Emby.

Did the setup, added my folder where pretty much everything in terms of entertainment goes, and it all worked out smoothly. So, now I tried to cast a show to my chromecast, it was in decent quality, just like any other show I download. The playback was choppy, skipping just about every other frame, so I tried to restart Emby through the android app.

All of a sudden pretty much everything in my library was gone except for three movies and one album of music (all in separate folders). The files that were deleted were both in separate folders and single files inside the shared folder.

I have no clue how this happened. Luckily, nothing of value was lost, since I've already watrched most of the stuff I had on there, but it's still really strange and shouldn't happen no matter what.

So if a dev or anything could respond to this and tell me what they need (logs etc.), I'm happy to help. I've gone through the logs myself, but didn't really find anything of value, but I might've missed something. The video I tried to play was in 50fps, and I have a gen2 chromecast (which should be able to run 60fps, but some codecs are a bit iffy at times), so that's probably why it didn't play smoothly.

Edit: Embry did not have access to the folders which didn't get deleted. I probably downloaded those a long time ago on a different PC, so probably something with that. At least that tells me Embry actively tried to delete everything,

Emby does not delete anything without user intervention, not ever. If you can provide a server log from when this happened then we can probably identify what you may have clicked on that did this. There is a Delete Media button in the interface. Instructions on how to do that can be found here:

Sounds like corrupt drive, maybe the stress from the media scan may have pushed it over the edge? Read the SMART info from the drive see if you see errors.

Did you customize the folder paths?  Specifically, did you point Emby's "cache" folder somewhere besides the default?

If so, was this folder a parent of your media?

overClocked!

Or perhaps the Transcoding temporary path...?

Sorry for the delayed response. I have now attached all the logs from when Emby was installed to when I noticed my folder was wiped.

Good idea, I've had 2 of these drives for a really long time and had no idea this was a thing. The drive in question is fine as far as I can tell using Crystaldiskinfo.

I've gone through all the settings I applied after installation, and I did not mess with the cache folder. All I did was add a folder in the initial setup menu where I've got all my downloaded material. If I did it would probably be in the logs I've added, so take a look just in case.

After installation I started to go through all the features and added subtitle downloads from Opensubtitles, changed hardware acceleration to Nvidia NVENC, aswell as added the Rotten Tomatoes plugin. I remember that I did change some metadata settings in the initial setup menu while installing Emby.

I also remember now when I first tried to cast a show to my chromecast, I noticed two folders which I know I deleted from my drive manually just a few minutes before. Figured Emby hadn't noticed yet so I marked them, pressed the drop down menu and tapped "Delete" (in the android app). I'm sure I pressed the right thing and didn't manually delete everything, but maybe something went wrong there.

It doesn't even look like Emby has write access to your folders because the logs are filled with access denied errors when trying to save metadata. I do see in one log you tried to use the delete function but that also reported failure due to access denied errors coming from your file system.

Those are the 4 old subfolders (3 movies and 1 album) which were downloaded a long time ago on a different OS. I don't even have read permissions for them on my current OS and admin account, I need to add it before I can enter them (press continue as admin), so I haven't even tried to access them since I installed my new OS. So the access denied errors are from those specific subfolders (Jack reacher, Seven Psychopaths, Triple 9 and Two Steps From Hell).

The rest of the subfolders were downloaded on my current PC and had full read/write permissions. There was around 400GB of media that got deleted in what felt like an instant, and the recycle bin was completely empty after it happened.

I first noticed the problem when there were a lot of movies and shows missing in the Emby app which were previously there. This was after I manually restarted the entire server from Emby on my phone. I thought that Emby probably just refreshed everything or I had to head off to my PC to do a manual refresh of the library or something. I went to my PC and noticed that pretty much everything was gone. Really strange.

Edit: Now when I think about it I actually did choose to save metadata inside the respective folders for each movie/show. And the logs like you say show access denied, but from what I can see only for the folders which didn't get deleted like I said in the beginning of this post. So Emby didn't have write access for those specific folders, but for the rest which are gone, it probably did.

Do you remember what you clicked delete on inside the emby app? Was it a higher level folder perhaps? That's about the only thing I can think of.

I marked two boxes which were greyed out (no metadata for them since it was porn, don't judge me), they had names so I know that it was the right ones. They had been downloaded just like all the other content.

The thing is, they were already deleted on the drive which I manually did on Windows, but Emby had not realized that yet since I guess it only does automatic refreshes every 10 minute or so. So perhaps it tried to delete them, they didn't exist and it decided to delete the parent folder instead (D:\Aktuella downloads)? And when it tried to delete that entire folder, it did not have read or write access for 4 of the subfolders, so it deleted everything but those, which explains why D:\Aktuella downloads with 4 subfolders of content which have weird read/write permissions still exists. Probably not, but that's the only explanation I can come up with.
