Downmix to Stereo to include Live TV

For some reason the downmix to stereo option only applies to videos. Please can this be extended to live tv as most/all players on android tv have an issue with UK DVBS2 DD+2.0.

If this is not the case then it is an oversight.

However, just so you know - if you have the option to use VLC for Live TV unchecked then this option will force a transcode because the Google player we are using cannot downmix on the device.  It will only be transcoding the audio though.

What, exactly do you mean by this option isn't being applied to Live TV?  I just tested and I believe it is.

apologies if that is the case, what lead me to this confusion is that checking the box to use an external player for videos greys out the Audio Output option and makes it look as if its no longer functional and therefore only related to recorded tv.

so for instance if i use external for recorded tv but internal for live tv am i able to downmix to stereo? and would i have to re-enable internal for recorded tv, change the setting and disable it again? didnt seem very intuitive to me. but you are correct, this is what you have to do.

i also hope i have some clearer feedback on how UK DVBS2 streams work with android tv if you are interested, switching backends confirmed that its not restricted to dvblink and has given me some more insight into the problem:

  • first vlc is not able to play back either live tv or recorded tv smoothly. the audio continues fine but the video skips about constantly.
  • secondly the only way i can get playback to start on the internal player is to either have it play direct but downmix to stereo or transcoded video with either audio option. attempting direct play with direct audio just gets a spinning circle. but that doesnt seem logical because direct audio and direct video work on their own, just not at the same time
  • unfortunately what really kills it is that the emby app will always try to play back recorded tv on vlc (unless the external player is checked) and as ive indicated playback is really bad for UK DVBS2 tv. There is no way to opt to play recorded tv on the internal player.

i did previously suggest that you would be better having player settings for live AND recorded tv and then settings for all other media. this is because any issues present in live tv and therefore requiring some special treatment are also going to be there in the recorded tv from the same source

hope this explains better. ta

also, another question if i may. What it is that controls the refresh of the recorded tv items on the main screen? live tv updates when you come back to the main screen but recorded tv does not seem to. often it only seems to refresh these items once every 4-5 hours, e.g. we may not see any other than the first recordings of the day (5-7pm) even by the time we go to be past midnight.

the detailed recorded tv screen also only updates when you enter it. is there likely to ever be a way where this updates without interaction and timely? and same for the main screen?

I understand that is is "recorded TV" to you but to Emby it is just another video.  Instead of thinking of it as recorded TV we need to determine exactly what it is about the video that makes it not work well in VLC so that we can hopefully make it choose a better option.

Yeah, I'll have to look at what I should trigger that on.

well, an easy "fix" would be to have an option to use vlc or not globally in the emby app, not just for live tv. but agreed, this is not really a solution, more avoiding the problem.

what can i do to help you figure out why it doesn't play smoothly in vlc? really, nothing has changed since the logs, sample files and descriptions i provided 3-4 months ago but you were never really clear on if you could even reproduce the issue from the sample.

still open to suggestions on the above, but in the meantime can i provide some further feedback on the recorded tv sub menu. mainly simplification:

i would replicate the wmc look. that was just one horizontal row of all recorded tv items that could be single recordings or grouped by series. the list could be sorted a-z and by recording date (also by oriiginal recording date i think). recordings within a season sub menu were also listed by recording date.

at the moment there is duplication and the final row isn't needed as these options are directly available from the home screen

hope this helps

@@ebr i just tried one of the offending files in the vlc app on the shield accessing the recording directly across the network and it plays beautifully smooth. In emby using vlc its really stuttery. so what else does that leave to investigate?

I'm asking about this statement...

well we're troubleshooting why the emby embedded version of vlc doesnt work properly so i'm not sure what that test would tell us? i can try it but i was really showing you that vlc on android works emby / vlc on android does not.

**** accepting that these are possibly different versions of vlc

with emby and vlc as an external player its great. so is it the version of vlc you are using or how you are using it?

Perfect :D.

So, that investigation points to the version of VLC.  The next major update of the app will be updating this so hopefully that will get it.

Thanks for the legwork.

that would be great. where might this sit in your priorities?

a further thing that will need fixing if i may. the indicator for audio track selection with the internal and vlc players is still incorrect. changing the selection works fine but when the lower choice is active the check is in the upper box. when the upper choice is active no check is displayed for either.

This is only on Live TV, right?

Also recorded live tv. Anything that comes from the tv server, I'm using media portal now but it was the same with dvblink. Also doesn't matter if it's a dvbt or dvbs source

actually i even know what the problem is. i bet the app assumes the first audio track is track 1? this audio described track is always labelled track 0.

Hi @@Spaceboy, the latest beta version of the Emby app offers all the HD Audio pass-through you need. Check out the beta thread for more details:

https://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/42239-android-tv-beta-13x/

We think you'll enjoy the next update to the stable channel. Thanks !

and this, the problem two posts up is still there . You still assume the first track is going to be track 1, not track 0

The app doesn't make any assumptions about audio track indexes.

Probably best for you to submit a fresh in-app log for this issue.  Thanks.
