Puff 4
Hi, I'm building up a server with some old parts I had laying around. Dual Xeon X5660 on a Supermicro X8DT3 motherboard 96GB DDR3 ECC RAM Triple Channel 500GB SSD for OS 20TB Storage What GPU would you guys recommend? I'm guessing the GPU transcoding will be more efficient than using the CPUs.
Ponyo 22
That's a pretty powerful setup, why not stick with transcoding on the cpu and see if that performs well enough for your needs? Even my intel nuc i3 can handle three simultaneous transcodes from 10 ~ 20mbit sources.
Puff 4
I see your point.. my current system is Dual Xeon E5506 12GB DDR3 ECC 128SSD 10TB for storage. and I figured since I have the opportunity to upgrade I might as well go from a decent system to an ideal system. And I may end up running a few VMs on it.
Ponyo 22
Oh I just noticed that cpu is from 2009 and actually scores lower an passmark than then i3 in my intel nuc. I don't have any experience with nvidia gpu acceleration so I'm afraid I'm not much help on that point but I think I read nvidia cards have some limitations. Anyway why don't you first build the system with the parts you got and see how it performs? You might want to post how many streams/transcodes you want to do simultaneously and what the quality of the source material is.
