LiquidFX 135
So I have had a 4k tv for a little while now and they are finally starting to release some 4k movies. Due to this I will have to install a new HD since the 2 movies I have take up a bit more space than that outdated 1080 junk. What are you plans for 4k content? PhinkBig 9
Really waiting to see if there will be any options for importing UHD discs...I know there is plenty of discussion happening, but not enough discs and players in the wild for an answer yet. Traction Tim 11
I shan't do anything until I buy my next projector. 1080 still looks good on a 106" screen
LiquidFX 135
Very true, I will have a projector setup in my next house. I have already told the wife that I will have a dedicated theater/gaming room. I would love to now but our current house is to small and a baby on the way, priorities....lol
fantaxp7 190
My plan is to buy one of these fantastic new LG OLED tv's. Last years models on sale for 5k from 10k...They look amazing. This years have many important upgrades over last years IMO. Those are around 8k for the 65" so I figure in time they will be cut in half to 4k ($4,000) as the previous generation got cut in half. SO come next year...if the next gen starts at that price...in theory...it should be 4k and end of year 2k for a 65"....fingers crossed...but I hope next year is the year I move to an OLED, HDR, HFR, WCG and 4k resolution (which I find to be the least important improvement) tv. Koleckai Silvestri 1150
Other... I plan to upgrade my main television to 4K this year. Still waiting on content to be more readily available though. Should happen this year as well. Deathsquirrel 741
I can have up to a 75" screen in my family room. For 4k to be of any use I'd need to be within 8' of the screen. I'm not and won't be. Useless in this house. Some people have space for larger screens, sit really close to the screen, or just don't care if their monster magic speaker cables actually do anything so I'm sure 4K will sell OK
Redshirt 1487
I'm not in a hurry to collect 4k content. I've got a few titles in 4k and my Core2Quad can barely transcode the content to 1080p on my home network, never mind transcoding to a low enough bitrate to stream outside my network. Emby server supports multiple versions of movies but that means I'd need to keep a 4k and 1080p version of each movie/episode to accommodate all my streaming needs. That's assuming all clients even properly utilize multiple versions. There's also media sync, but that removes the whole "watch it right now" aspect because you have to consciously decide well in advance what you want to take with you. For myself, I will not be putting any 4k content on my unRAID server. Doing so makes little sense since the number of players playing the content back would be minimal, remote users playing 4k content would drive my cpu utilization through the roof. It's a lose / lose situation. Once I get my first display, I will most likely add an external USB drive some place, put the movies there, and add a Kodi native library there with all of my 4k content. pir8radio 1292
Lets not forget, 4k movies are not small. 102 GB/min @ 4K 16 Bit DPX. Granted, unless you are filming you will never see this size.. But still, ProRes 4k is about 5.3GB/min unless its highly compressed or low bitrate, which defeats the purpose. I think I will wait it out a bit... Anyway, until they push multi layer blue rays that can hold 200+GB, blue ray UHD really isn't the best 4k you will see, a normal 4k movie wont fit on a 100GB BR disk. That's why the highres UHD's ship on hard drives, I guess that means you don't have to rip it from disk, just copy paste But even if 4k dvd's hang around 100GB, which still looks awesome, That's about 10 movies a TB, so your 300 movie collection now consumes 30+TB, and if you don't want to loose your collection, you will raid it which, at the least, will eat 60TB... JeremyFr79 228
There's only 1 setup in my house that would be worth upgrading to 4k and that would be my projector in my theater room. Outside of that I sit 15 feet from my 50" in my living room, and I'm not spending the money to upgrade my 37" in my bedroom to a 4k for a difference I wont see or care about watching TV while half asleep lol. Now if and when 4K projectors become reasonably priced I'll upgrade as I sit 8' from a 106" screen. But that's going to be a while. To be honest my next "major upgrade" will be to an Atmos\DTS-X system and full 7.2.4 to me that will be a much better upgrade in the near term. hatharry 85
There was once talk of a codec/container ("svc" i think) that could have multiple resolutions (4k, 1080p, 720p) in the one file and only be the size of the 4k stream. anyone know more about it? would save space and transcoding. ThePaladinTech 22
I'll go 'other' - I will get 4k content as it becomes available. but no plans to upgrade to a 4K tv at this time. and for what it's worth I'm still upgrading to "that 1080 junk"

laie_techie 12
None of my hardware currently supports 4k, so I plan to do what I did for 1080p. I will wait for a standard disc format (I didn't want to get burned in the HD-DVD / BD format war) and standard cable (what is the HDMI version needed for 4k? 8k?). Once these two issues are settled, I will buy bundles which include discs I can watch with my current set-up plus a disc in the new format. I still buy DVD / BD combo packs because my laptop doesn't have a BD drive.

Deathsquirrel 741
Guys are missing that 4k also brings in HDR. Not missing, just not caring all that much. I wouldn't quadruple my storage space and rebuy 1000+ titles just for HDR and that's the only real benefit I'd see.

tdwilli1 0
I have just bought the Vizio P55-C1 and have a few titles I am trying to cast to it from Emby Android. Trouble is the server doesn't seem to be able to cast to my HTPC, it just indicates it's playing on the client, FFMPEG starts on the server and nothing gets cast to the TV. I am able to play them at 4K through Emby for Media Center on the PC. We seem to need support for playing 4K content on the server for casting to these new devices. Allan Cameron 40
I have had a 4K tv for a few years now. Love it. At some point i will pick up a new 4K player once other brands are available. The 1 samsung is UGLY lol Right now for me i just need more choices. Then i can start picking up 4K tittles in store. Oh..The Martian looks just amazing on 4K disc. They had it playing 4K in store beside a same size 1080p screen. WOW!! Difference was night and day. The funny part was, of the 2 TVs playing The Martian the 4K TV was LESS expensive then the high end 1080p TV. With prices down now and moving into the future, 4K is a no brainier if you are in the market for a new TV.
