No Collections Dynamic Image

The automatic dynamic image in previous server versions was nice and fit in with the automatically created images previously used. I don't understand why you stopped using them for Collections but use the dynamic image for playlists. Music lost its dynamic image as well. Updating it for all users is also a pain since you cannot set these images globally.

Would be nice if there was a script so we could make these based on our libraries, collections, playlists, etc...

These images are now global, assuming you're on beta or dev, no exceptions except playlists since those are not yet shared between users.

That is a good change, if we can't have the dynamic images then, at least, it won't take me an hour to update these for my users.

So now hopefully you understand why it's not so easy to keep the dynamic images, because you guys are going to turn around and say my kid's movie folder is showing scarface. and then we're just going to say well we've been through this already because we tried per-user images, and it caused a lot of confusion because people couldn't figure out how to set their Movies image once for all users.

Perhaps a design that would address everyones concerns/wishlist is....

Under the image metadata management...

An option to generate/regenerate a primary and thumb image...

If an in appropriate one is generated users can request another one..

Perhaps options for how members are weighted ...eg latest...unwatched....

Wether fixed or dynamically regenerated on scedule or event...

Perhaps some system defaults and specific instance options around how the images are composed for 1,2,3,4,5+, members.

Well I think they also have a usability issue and that is why I'm no longer keen on them as the defaults. Not that my new defaults are great, but at least they are distinct. The dynamic images look cool, but when you've got 8 of them side by side, all with their little sliced images, you can't really tell what's what unless you focus in on them and read the text. That's why I think even a random movie image would be better because it's immediately identifiable just from a glance.

In most of the apps though, there is text right below the image that makes them quite distinct.  I think they look very sharp and I hope we aren't going to be moving away from them.

The ability to generate one on demand is a good idea.

Not sure I see the problem.

When my kids were of an age where I didn't want them to see certain films, I just created them their own folder or create a "Family" folder. In Emby the non family folders could just be removed on a profile you create.

It will be a shame to lose the dynamic view completely.

I see your point for home screens especially...

When talking about movie collections specifically, which a few (not the majority) have no image metadata on tmdb, a generated image will often (always?) be distinctive...even if it were to use the image of the 1st child only, that would be better than a generic image imo for movie collections.

(Maybe imagemagick can overlay "collection" at 1 of top, bottom, left, right)

Perhaps the animated gif suggestion could dove tail nicely here and the members just rotate around.

Sounds like a lot of effort for a low priority mind you.

The more generic the object being represented the less useful a generated image becomes and the more sophisticated the generation code needs to be to make the generated image relevant/identifyable.

Top level objects like media folders perhaps are not best suited to dynamic images (without very sophisticated generation code to consider favourites, latest, just watched, unwatched).

Movie collections perhaps are suited.

A plugin to help users (re)generate an image that is meaningful/identifyable to themselves, where they decide, might be a solution.

as the generation code increases in sophistication, users will reasses their judgement as to where and when it is best used.

As a complete counterpoint the best interfaces i have seen have no image metadata for top level objects, effort and screen real estate is concentrated where differentiation and navigation becomes more important

.ie lower down objects.

I just noticed this today as well.  I see why you are not generating them anymore.  Is there a list of situations in which these are used, and maybe I can make up some generic images that will somewhat blend in?  In other words, a generic image for a boxset backdrop, a boxset poster, etc.. etc...

Sorry guys it was removed. The main library view images are no longer user specific because the feedback that we've seen is that you guys just want to set your images once as an admin and have them apply to all users. i could bring back the thumbnail generation but it will inevitably cause some to complain that the thumbnails show content that is not appropriate for certain users.

The answer for this is simple, allow or disallow dynamic collection images, allowing either pulls from ALL content ratings, OR a specific highest rated limit collection.. OR users are simply warned, There are no content rating checks on dynamic content images for collections IF they choose to use them. End of story, problem solved. Please put them back, I have a really lame looking collections icon and Movies and TV have cool looking Dynamic images.

I am running the latest stable, and I noticed that my collections image is broken also, it use to have dynamic "slices" the same as movies and tv and now its just showing popcorn.  I clicked on it and deleted the popcorn image hoping it would change back to the way it used to be with the dynamic images, but now there is no image at all.

How can I change it back to the way it used to be?

How about creating a plugin to create dynamic images from a selected part of your library - eg Movies, TV, 3d, Sport etc etc etc and then be able to apply the created image as the selected library icon. Solves every-ones problem in one. The default can be whatever @@Luke & co chooses it to be and those who want sliced images can set up their own via the plugin.

Great idea... Go for it!

If you are replying to me, unfortunately I wouldn't know where or how to start. I was thinking that it might be something @@ebr could attach to CoverArt or to create by itself seeing as he clearly has significant knowledge of that stuff...

Why not just fix it the way it was before, there was nothing wrong with how it was working, the dynamic sliced images look good, and it still works fine for the movies, music, tv now I have a collection folder that does not match.

There were actually a couple of problems with it.

1) Performance

2) There was no control over what images would be chosen so your kids could be staring at horror (or worse) images.

EBR its working fine for Movies, TV, Music

Why should collections be any different?

Now I have the nice looking dynamic slices for Movies, TV, Music and a blank image for Collections because I deleted the stupid popcorn image.

Here is a screen capture:

You can see its working 100% correctly for everything except Collections

EBR,

Also I disagree when you said you have no control over what images are displayed, obviously images related to the Collections would be chosen, so if I have a Star Wars Collection and a Harry Potter Collection I would expect to see those.

So you can control what is displayed by controlling what you have in your Collections.

I don't think someone would put XXX porn inside a Collection that also has Harry Potter.

You can also use the edit images function and set a static image if you don't want the dynamic slices, so why remove the default behavior?  Just change it back to have dynamic slices and if someone doesn't want it they can then select a specific image.

The fact that this was changed without any warning and now looks broken compared to the rest of the Libraries is the issue.

I just rolled my own (in a very crude fashion) - not too bad from a distance though...

Wish I could say I wrote some brilliant automated script or something, but all I did was search TheMovieDB for 1000x1500 images of .jpg Collections and download them.

Load each into Picasa (cause I'm too cheap to buy Adobe something) and exported them as 360x540 (the same ratio as 1000x1500), then re-imported those versions and cropped them to 230x540, so that 4 of them next to each other would fill up a 960x540 rectangle (which is the Primary image size) with space for some black lines in between.

Then found a program called Artweaver Free which was the only one I could figure out how to put 4 pictures in (on a 540x960 template) and still be able to move them around when they were all there (others I tried locked ones that were already there when you added another one). Positioned them by eye/hand. Added a slightly transparent black band at the bottom in a new layer.

(should have made the images a bit shorter as I see as they are actually too tall compared to the others, but can have another fiddle sometime for that)

They all started here before being added to the server core.

Seeing as there isn't one (as far as I can see), think I'll try putting in a feature request for this.....
