BDP-S5500 and profile creation

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone, I can play files fine from the USB key, but if I try to play those files via the emby server the process is hit and miss.

I used a profile created by others, which I will post later, then edited it myself and played around with it, it now plays more files but not all of the avi files.

Can someone point me to a tutorial on how to build profiles? Or can someone on this board help? At all?

Thanking you

BTW this Bluray player is truly awesome, if it had an app for Emby with the same UX you get in Windows it would sell like hotcakes for £78, with Amazon and Netflix connectivity to boot...

If you're sure it is using your custom profile, suggest you give the profile a unique name and check your logs to verify, it's just a matter of adjusting the <DirectPlayProfiles>, <TranscodingProfiles>,  and <ResponseProfiles>

I really wish there was a good explanation of these WRT Emby, but here's my 2 cents:

<DirectPlayProfiles> match what the device supports directly

<ResponseProfiles>  device supports certain codecs, but requires them wrapped/identified with certain containers

<TranscodeProfiles>  failing the above (and possibly failing a limitation below), these identify what to transcode into to present to the device

<CodecProfiles>  limitations of supported codecs

<SubtitleProfiles>  limitations of supported subtitles (Wasn't required on my BDP-S5100, but is on other devices. I usually use DVDSUB inside an MKV or MP4)

Hope that helps

http://download.sony-europe.com/pub/manuals/tvhc/4549800112.pdf

Page 41 and 42 cover all of the files and formats that the Bluray player can handle. Using the USB connection I can play every file on my backup drive right now. If I try to play the same list of files from the DLNA server, it plays MKV files fine, but not AVI files for example (but it plays them fine via the USB connection).

I will attach my custom created profile in the next post.

This is actually the one build by brienj and published in this post:

http://emby.media/community/index.php?/topic/24406-issues-with-ff-rw-etc/?p=249239

All I did is to remove from all entries the multiple file formats he entered under DirectPlayProfile container and make it default to h264. So MKVs started working, but AVI ceased to work.

I have now changed that back to "mpeg4,h264" and I will test it tonight. I will also test the other formats and report if they are working. I also have ripped my dvds as vob files (not isos) so I am going to test that too.

There are a few things to look for regarding a file that doesn't play on a Sony BDP (eg avi files):

What is the mediainfo for the corresponding file? This can be obtained from Emby via the web client, mediainfo program, and/or transcode log files if available.

What file type are they reported as when you browse them on the BDP? (eg mp4, avi, ts, m2ts, etc)

When you play/attempt to play them, what happens? (transcode, fail with error message, fail have to pull plug on BDP)

You have this above in your profile:

<DirectPlayProfile container="avi" audioCodec="ac3,wmav2,mp3,pcm" videoCodec="mpeg4,h264" type="Video" />

If the avi container you have has those codecs, it should direct play and the BDP should show it as an AVI. It appears your profile does have some restrictions on ac3 that may prevent some files from direct playing.

The only valid use of AVI for DLNA with that BDP, according to the Sony manual, is

Xvid

.avi Dolby Digital, LPCM, WMA9, MP3

The manuals by Sony are vary unreliable and their notes don't help regarding some files may or may not play .....

My biggest issue working through this on a BDP-S5100 was DivX vs Xvid and levels of DivX, as I recall.

I ended up using handbrake to re-encode any of my AVI rips to MP4 with h264 and AAC/AC3 for maximum compatability.

BDP plays all of this files, this is their current status via DLNA

1) plays now

Container: MKV

Video Codec: H264

Bitrate: 10791 kbps

Audio Codec: DCA

initially was not playing when the profile contained "mpeg4,h264,vc1"

Changed it to "h264" now it works

2) does not play now
Container: MKV
Video Codec: H264
Bitrate: 2771 kbps
Audio Codec AC3

3) plays now
Container: avi
Video Codec: mpeg4
Bitrate: 1367 kbps
Audio codec AC3
Intially did not work when I had only "h264" in the profile, added mpeg4 and now it works

Well it seems that sometimes i can play a file through dlnA and a few minutes later the system thinks that there are no compatible files in the folder. I will see if this is a server issue by installing serviio and see if it has the same issues
