OT: HTPC Emby "Cube" Recomendation

I wanted to recommend Emby to a friend.

Is there a small "cube like" setup that will transcode 2-3 streams, use Emby Theater locally,  and have 4 or 5 hard disk bays (4 x 3.5 and 1 x 2.5)?

Cool idea... Are the old shuttle style cases still around?? Those were able to be built rather beastly. Although not much room for multiple HDDs.

Small cube with 4-5 hard drives doesn't really exist unless you are taking one of the more powerful off the shelf and units.

That MicroServer is pretty sweet :)

As long as you get a recent one, then the processor(s) should be OK to do what you want.

Koleckai Silvestri

My Emby Server is housed in a Fractal Design Node 804. But it isn't a small case. http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/node-series/node-804

Fits my needs of ten 3.5" drive bays and has mounting points for up to four more drives.

Fractal Design also has the Core 500. http://www.fractal-design.com/home/product/cases/core-series/core-500

This is what I recommended based off your suggestions.

$1,250 Recommended Basic HP MicroServer

• $750 Xeon Server: http://amzn.com/B016A2FN4O

• $500 Storage Disks: 2 x http://amzn.com/B00XS423SC(8TB usable storage with RAID 1)

+$750 Option Mass Storage:

• RAID 5 Cache Module http://amzn.com/B0153IR90M

• $500 Storage Disks: 2 x http://amzn.com/B00XS423SC(24TB with RAID 5, 4 disks total)

+$100 OS Quick Boot/Cache Option:

• Quick Boot SSD Disk: http://amzn.com/B00OAJ412U

• Quick Boot Carrier: http://amzn.com/B0152IXV00

PS - 8TB drives untested with embedded RAID controller, but should work. Official spec is 4TB but datasheet printed before 6TB and 8TB existed.

Mine is the same as koleckai. I have a fractal design mode 804. It is t small but isn't large either considering the number of drives it holds.

This is my next build for my Emby Server Take 3 design. This generation is all about physical size and power usage. If all goes as planed the power usage should be around 10-15 watts and as you can see it is a small case. The big part that might help with your streams would be the CPU. While it isn't a high-end CPU it does have QuickSync which the newest Emby Builds support. I have not tested this nor can I say it will work well but it should.

I have a Shuttle XPC. It has two mini PCI-E slots and one supports mSATA. You stick a mSATA SSD drive in there for the OS, the other one people use Wifi but I would never. It has space for only two 3.5 drives though, not the 4 you wanted but not bad for $260.00. You could possibly use a drive adapter though and load more 3.5 drives in the space for the optical drive if you don't want or need a BluRay/DVD. It does have for 4 SATA connections on the MB. I love mine besides the stock fan can get loud. Their cooling system for the CPU/GPU really seems to work well.

AgileHumor,

Do you plan on using this as a standard PC, gaming PC, Or is this a dedicated HTPC?

As I can say from experience the Intel Nuc makes a wonderful box for under the TV. Small, easy, and takes little power plus has a built in IR for the remote. While there isn't room for 3-5 hard drives it has two USB ports for external drives.
