Anyone look at the new DS716+ ANY THOUGHTS

Depends on what you want to do with it?

I love my synology DS units for backing up my important files, have one at home and one at my brothers and they sync our home pictures, and documents across the internet.  For backing up important docks, the Synology units CANNOT be beat.  I love them for their ease of use and everything they can do.

For movies, I do not like standard Raid 5/6.  Mainly because one movie involves spinning up all of my disks, and in turn creates more heat.

Here is a comparison for me between the Synology build and an unRaid build:

$500 Expansion unit

$470 DS716+

$1050 5TB Drive 7 * $150

Total: $2020 for 30TB of storage, and max 2-3 Transcoding Streams with a Celeron Processor

An Unraid Build (6 data disks, 1 parity disk, 1 movie on 1 disk, only 1 disk spins up for reads per movie)

$100 Case

$230 Core i5-6600k

$165 Motherboard MSI Z170A 1151 ATX

$1050 5TB Drive 7 * $150

$200 16GB DDR4 Memory

$89 Unraid License

$120 SAS/Raid Controller

$15  SAS to Sata Breakout Cable

$80  Power Supply

Total: $2049 for 30TB of storage, and max 6-8 Transcoding Streams with the i5 processor and 16GB of memory.

For movies, for me, Unraid would win every time.  In unRaid I can also run all of my favorite apps including Emby Server via Docker.
