Path Substitution Question

I'm testing out emby server and the kodi addon at the moment whilst I wait for some new hard drives to move my library across. When I first installed the Kodi addon, nothing would play, it wasn't until I enabled (use http) that thing's began playing - so I assume by default it looks for your media based on the rules you set up for path substitution.

So my question is - If I set up path substitution, will the addon fall back to http if it can't connect i.e. if I'm outside my home network? I've got emby mapped to a domain name and basically I want a seamless experience with Kodi wherever I am, at home or travelling, Does the addon do this, or do I have to explicitly choose http in the settings when I'm away?

Sorry if this has been asked before.

Thanks

Yeah but will it auto switch to http if path substitution fails? I don't wan't to have http enabled at home because it put's unnecessary stress on the server - I know I can manually toggle http/direct, but I'm asking if it will do that automatically.

The option to use alternate address in the emby for kodi addon is precisely for this purpose.... Not quite seamless but you just need to set it up and toggle the setting for wan/LAN access
