Available in both the Google and Amazon stores very soon, Emby for Android TV and Emby for Fire TV will have a new, re-vamped player based on VLC and several interface improvements.

Less transcoding, better audio and easy sub switching

The integration of VLC for playback means less transcoding, Dolby Digital audio bitstreaming (Android TV only) and fast, seamless internal audio and subtitle track switching for much of your content. Right now, VLC and direct stream playback is limited to 720p and below content by default but there are options to enable it for all or limit to SD if you encounter stuttering. Be sure to investigate the new playback options in the settings to find the combination that works best for your environment.

Home screen improvements

The home screen gets a couple of important improvements.

  • Clock display – The home screen now has a clock on it that will show the current time in your local format. This clock is now consistent through all Emby ATV screens
  • Current user display – Additionally, each screen now shows the currently logged-in user right under the clock.
  • Current item detail panel – As you navigate around the home screen (and any other screen with the same layout such as by genre or performer) you will now get a pop-up information panel with details on the currently selected item. So you can now see a quick summary and time information on an item without having to drill down into the actual detail screen – making it easier to play things out of the Next Up or Recent lists.

Color your world

You can also now choose from one of several Material Design colors for the sideline category list on the home screen and other screens that have this area. No longer are you locked into Emby green or Fire TV grey.

Other improvements

Also included are many other improvements in display and functionality as well as bug fixes. Some of the other improvements include:

  • Improved single episode display – The detail page for a single TV episode will now also show you the next several episodes in that season for quick access
  • Access the series from episode detail – Useful when you enter an episode from “Next Up” on the home screen.
  • Proper handling of missing episodes during multi-episode playback. If the next episode in line is missing from your library, the app will now prompt you to confirm that you want to continue playback instead of just skipping over it.
  • Studio logos in both details and playback OSD
  • Search response improvements

More to come

Look for this new version on your device or in the stores soon and know that we’re working on many more improvements to come. Thank you for supporting Emby!
