iam4uk 26
Now that Microsoft has officially killed WMC in Windows 10 + ... A true replacement for WMC must eventually incorporate its DVR / Live TV functionality. Is there any chance Emby Theater will be that WMC replacement? SiliconDust (HDHomeRun) are KickStarting a CableCARD DVR device+"app" -- could such functionality be accessed from within Emby Theater at some point? I anticipate being able to use my Windows 7 Cinema PCs running WMC for the next 5 years; after that (or after 8 years with Win8.1), the television part of the Cinema PC Experience will necessarily change. Can Emby Theater become the cornerstone of such an experience?
JeremyFr79 228
The HUGE 800LB Gorilla in the room of a problem is that in order to use CableCard, the software would need approval and certification/licensing from CableLabs, This is EXTREMELY expensive and very strict, a company like HDHomeRun has the money in order to do that, and a platform to get a return of that investment. The ONLY way i could ever see Emby being able to do that would be to start charging for Emby (I'd happily pay btw ) Not to mention it would most likely need to go closed source as well thus squashing all the other fantastic development that goes into it. I would love to see Emby be able to do this as my home completely relies on WMC/Xbox for live TV and I refuse to go back to TiVo, or use the horrible X1 from Comcast. But financially I don't see this being an option. Have no doubt though that someone out there will find ways around this at some point. I know there are certain platforms that currently and without approval or certification support cablecard, But are limited to "freely copy" channels only, with some providers this is not an issue as nearly all channels but premium are flagged "copy freely" however other provider's copy protect all their channels making it useless. There's alot of issues with CableCard even though the whole point was to open up the market to more devices/possibilities to utilize your cable TV. reluctantflux 38
Perhaps, if so inclined, the core team could kickstart a closed source module to do this. Though with the hdhomerun app being integrated into Kodi by silicon dust, my guess is Emby will be able to tap into that somehow.
iam4uk 26
Can Emby Theater become a host for the Silicon Dust HDHR DVR app? (Planning ahead... Kodi is currently projected to be such a host, but that need not be exclusive, so far as I can tell.) Can Emby within Kodi be developed to the point that Kodi becomes WMC-Next, and Emby for Kodi becomes MBC-Next? If such plans could be pursued, or if such plans are explicitly of no interest, either would be noteworthy for future media access forecasting... wiretap 30
Emby needs a kickstarter for CableCARD. I would donate.
iam4uk 26
I would contribute to a full featured WMC replacement, and Emby is my favorite way to access my physical-media-rips. So if Emby Theater or Emby for Kodi can be brought to maturity with CableCARD DVR incorporated, I will gladly pay for such.
Koleckai Silvestri 1150
Silicondust just ran a successful Kickstarter to fund a replacement for WMC. Though it will only work with their HDHomerun equipment. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1275320038/hdhomerun-dvr-the-dvr-re-imagined/ Still time to get in on the discounted first year subscription. Emby will just need a way to pull that information in. HDHomerun is making a Kodi plugin already. whitestrat13 33
If Emby would deliver a cable card DVR, I'd happily pay $100-200 annually for the service. I'd much rather give you guys my money than the cable company.
