Guest
Windows 10 - ASUS router DDNS was setup through Emby server using a cert convert website. Ran well for a while but now I cant connect no matter how I've tried. Its beyond my knowledge to figure out and pay for SSL and Domains etc. especially since this method has worked before for me. Are Domains, Nginx and SSL Certs the only was to run a dang Emby server securely?? I just dont understand what I'm doing wrong anymore. Is team view a thing? can someone help me setup my server without to much jargon!? Honestly, Thank you for your time in reading this complaint. please excuse my vision isn't the best anymore. Luke 37100
Hi there, what exactly happens when you try to connect?
Guest
Can't connect, ddns is setup, I export to folder - extract - website follow process for pfx, router port 8920 to my pc open, in emby locate pfx file enter password, set to required for all connections disabled upnp. Um I can't think of anything else I can possibly screen shot later as I read/seen in ALOT of other posts. I also can't connect through emby connect. Email is setup, password right.. Luke 37100
Do you get an error message? What does it say?
Guest
I can see from dashboard Remote WAN has the https I want and has the correct port 8920 but when I sign in on my phone I can see my server but the message comes up "We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again." What is "read proxy headers to determine.." setting? Do I need that put to "only when they contain remote network addresses? Or On or off? Sorry I'm so confused. Brain's turning to mush lol
Luke 37100
Can you show a screenshot of your emby server network settings? Are you using a reverse proxy?

Trevor68 48
So internal LAN connects fine, has anything changed in the router? do you still forward ports to the machine with Emby on it? has anything changed on that machine? Something is blocking the connection to receive that error externally, it simply cannot reach emby. If your using HTTPS then you should be able to connect without the port, so just https://emby.mydomainname.com or whatever your addy is. For that to work port 443 must be forwarded to the emby box by your router. Edited March 1 by Trevor68
Guest
That's kinda what I'm thinking as well... maybe I should just create a fresh DDNS via Asus just to clear things that could cause indifference?. Granted there's nothing but best to clear a fresh one.
Trevor68 48
you can check it is correct, just go to What Is My IP Address - See Your Public Address - IPv4 & IPv6 to check your external IP, then check your DDNS is the same. you can test ports as well. Open Port Check Tool - Test Port Forwarding on Your Router (yougetsignal.com) Edited March 1 by Trevor68

Trevor68 48
router model? for myself I use an Asus so I add ports on the Virtual Server/Port Forwarding page.
Guest
ASUS AX6100 WiFi 6 Gaming Mesh Router (RT-AX92U 2 Pack) - Tri-Band Gigabit Wireless Internet Router, Gaming & Streaming, AiMesh Compatible, Included Lifetime Internet Security, Adaptive QoS. I have added the ports for http and https accordingly.
Trevor68 48
ok so you forwarded 443 to the PC with Emby on it, now how is it going?
Guest
Do I need to switch to port 443??
darkassassin07 429
No, 8920 is fine as long as you're fine with entering it when you connect: https://<domain>:8920 Switching to 443 would allow you to enter only https://<domain> into your browser to connect. It's not necessary, just a quality of life thing. Lets get your connection actually working first. As trevor mentioned above: check that your WAN ip (as shown by whatsmyip.com) matches what your domain (ddns) has. Then ensure your router has a port forward rule forwarding 8920 from your WAN ip to the correct LAN ip of your server. Finally try connecting to your domain from an internet connection that's outside your LAN. Mobile data for example. Lessaj 64
You should also make sure that https is working internally first, just to make sure since the screenshots you posted of the dashboard were over http. Looks like it's running on your local machine so this URL should work. You'll likely get a certificate error, which is fine, it's just to make sure that the https listener is working properly. https://localhost:8920

Also home isps can block common ports to prevent hosting on their network. He shouldn’t even worry about ssl until http working as who know what his cert is since he’s using ASUS ddns. Trevor68 48
OP needs to explain how this was working in the first place, I mean it could never have worked without any ports forwarded??? Or was it relying on the "Automatic Port" setting? Also what broke it? clearly something changed, what was that, the update to 4.8? Given all the connection issues since 4.8 was automatic port removed, or is it broken now?
Guest
Sorry everyone but Unfortunately this computer jargon has got my eyes hurting and my head spinning. I don't know, I just can't figure out this shit. It's way to confusing. There's just no simple way to watch my server on my phone away from home. Jellyfin is even worst. I can figure out Kodi and add background etc but this is overkill for me. Probably will just cancle subscription next month. Edited March 5 by JStrat

I guess it's too late to simply ask what happened around the time this changed - something caused it, you know. If you can remember, that would help a lot. On 01/03/2024 at 20:40, Stratford said: Are Domains, Nginx and SSL Certs the only was to run a dang Emby server securely?? What do you mean by security in this context? It would certainly be easier to start by getting a direct http connection without added security going (again?) first if you're willing to try. We could then discuss what extra would be required to add https, the simplest way to set it up, and whether the effort would actually be worth it for you. Never fear, that doesn't prevent getting Emby going - I'm 77, for example. Paul
Guest
Okay, I'll give it another shot tomorrow morning, I'll answer best I can. I used to be it for a private mailing station before vision loss so it's difficult and frustrating but tomorrow I'll have a fresh pair of eyes to write/explain Thanks again everyone, keeping me hope up but also just by reading the replies it makes me wonder if I just need to factory reset and start over. Yet I will answer al questions in the alm.
