Apple TV app missing basic features?

Recommended Posts

I literally just got an Apple TV today and I can't seem to find the settings for basic things. I can't find the alphabet for jumping quickly through my library. I can't see where to change my subtitles to yellow with a dark background. The is an ever so slight delay in audio, but I can't change the sync.

I did a quick search on the forum, and it seems like these are things that have been requested for the past 4 years. Is this app no longer supported?

Well, been using it for a a little while and can't believe it. The LG app is actually better than this.  I actually like the Apple hardware, but I only wanted this for a Emby streamer and the Apple app doesn't do many of the things I find important.

Infuse is an option others have mentioned, but it doesn't allow for user switching nor music playback. Went ahead and bit the bullet and ordered a damned Nvidia Shield. I'll be giving this Apple TV to my daughter for her birthday I think.

It is appalling. Especially since Plex and Infuse both demonstrate that it can be done well so long as someone actually cares about it. I regularly have days where I regret going with Emby instead of Plex.

I wonder what the response would be if Emby offered a black-friday style "day of refund" for Apple TV customers who bought an Emby Premiere subscription and now regret it ...

HI, we are working on getting these features added to the Emby Apple TV app. Thanks for the feedback.

Nope - Emby as a whole will never get bad enough to drive me to Plex. If somehow Emby went away tomorrow, I'd go back to using Kodi and SMB shares before I would support Plex. They are the antithesis to who I want to support. Emby developers - so far in my experience - are real people and not greedy sellouts.

Is there a roadmap or changelog where users can see what progress is being made on the Apple app? No offence, but I've seen forum posts that are 4+ years old asking for these things.

Don't get your hopes up...going on 6 years and counting:

Apple TV isn't a priority for the Emby staff.

Also, don't bother asking Luke about it, you'll only get a robotic "we're working on it" response.  I think it's actually a bot.

Hi @Luke, I’ve moved over from Plex to Emby and find the server aspects more robust than I’d come to experience recently on Plex however there’s a significant gap between the Plex app on Apple TV and the Emby app, as an example even looking at the live tv guide you have no idea on the Apple TV which shows are new or repeats which you get on the Emby iPad app. There isn’t even a clock anywhere on the UI so you know what time it is.

is the Apple TV app being actively developed with planned regular capability drops or should I pull stumps with my Apple TVs and look to another platform?

TIA

Hi, yes we are working on getting the Emby Apple TV caught up to our other apps. Thanks.

that's got to be the funniest thing ever... bud up there says dont bother asking luke cuz you'll get a robotic response and sure enough, there it is.

just commenting that i swapped an appleTV in when emby on firetv couldnt handle some videos.  apple hardware is much better but no clock and no alphabet scroller.

seems like i should just go back to plex?

Are there any news when a new version will be released for apple tv? It's been more than a year since the last release with some new features...

id just assume the apple tv app is dead u nless someone picks up dev work.  the app appears behind the android one by quite a bit

another feature that appears missing is fwd/bsck... you cant skip to the next elisode, you have to exit and go back and find it.

which, if you're shuffling a large list means having to hit 3-4x buttons to reshuffle.

Check out the Emby beta builds from Test Flight.  The most recent beta (1.8.9.9) was released only 8 days ago.  There have been at last 6 builds in the past 90 days.  Clearly, Emby for Apple TV is not dead and the team is working to improve functionality.

6 builds in 90 days wow.  What did they add or it’s it just maint fixes?  Infuse and plex do weekly if not more than weekly updates for comparison.  Plex I also believe is rewriting their app to the appletv sdk to get better native support.

That's not the problem, the problem is that there are basic features that have been requested by users for more than 4 years and have not yet been implemented.

emby for apple tv is not exist , i dont call the current app even app

use infuse instead and coonect your emby server with it .

i just gave up on developers to do anything for this app ....

the only thing they know to say is that yes yes we will do on next update ( you are insulting consumers with saying this)

emby basic features must be like infuse thats what we want ...

hire some developers please and kick the current one out , they dont deserve to work for great emby

I don’t really use emby lol. I much prefer plex ui and the expanded features.  My remote users also wouldn’t use emby they found it “clunky” and “dated”.  Atleast with plex I know what I’m getting with emby they like to make a bunch of yeah we can do that and it’s been years, they would be better off just not replying because most of the forum is just people bumping and bitching about features lol.  I don’t want infuse, I think the ui and experience is just as bad as emby lol. The only thing they have going is they use a better video player that has expanded support which plex seems to atleast acknowledge and is working towards. Emby just says it’s hard…..

The basic basic things for a multimedia app is that to be able to play hdr or dolby vision videos,  which emby app doesn't even support that ( i mean apple tv version ), that's why so many people instead of emby app use infuse to get basic basic thing. Playing hdr or dolby vision is not even features....

I have been using Plex,  Plex doesn't support 3rd parties plugins and strm , that's why myself and so many other people's are not using it. In comparison emby has the upper hand

lol I lost all hope for this app. I really wish I could get a refund for my lifetime membership. Was the only reason I bought it and its been let down after let down after let down. Plex is also no different, the atv app is missing things but its alot better for my use now. At least I can watch hdr movies lol

I am also disappointed with this app. The iOS app is actually a lot better and has more features. I am not sure why that is the case. I am not even so bothered by the HDR stuff but the other basic missing features makes the app feel like an afterthought.

Hi, the next update to the Emby Apple TV app will be a significant one that will catch up in a number of areas. Thanks for the feedback.

Following this thread. I just got an NVIDIA Shield and was appalled at how bad the Android Emby app was compared to my LG version. The Shield solved many other problems (Dolby Vision playback, night listening mode). But the LG version of the Emby app is so much nicer. Basic things like moving subtitles to the bottom of the screen were missing from Android.

My secondary hope is now an Apple TV, but I'm worried reading this thread that it's also far behind LG. Will keep an eye here and see how the next update goes.

Hi.  Can you try searching for our standard android app (Just "Emby" on Amazon and "Emby for Android on Google) on the same device's app store and see how that compares?  It should be nearly identical to what you have on LG.

Thanks.

Wow, you just saved me.
I just found the other Emby app and at immediate glance, you're correct. This looks much more in-line with the LG app.

Just so you know, the other one comes up first when you search for 'Emby', and any normal person is going to think that is the primary app. Not sure if that's another version you guys control or what, but it had me believing that was the full Emby experience on Android.

Thank you SO much.
