this is still an issue - are we not there yet? Plex really has no problem with this and I'm confused why Emby cant do this basic function

Have you tried the beta of 4.8?  There have been many improvements in this area.

Alternatively, if you follow Emby's naming guidelines you will find that it does as well as Plex does with Plex's guidelines...

I'm having almost the same problem, the difference being that none of my TV shows identify.  My folder structure is the same as show in the link Chillout posted:

"\TV\Constantine (2014)\Season 01\S01xE01 - Non Est Asylum.mkv", the media type is TV Shows. Nothing auto identifies and if I try to do it manually, for example entering the imdb id, it ALWAYS comes up "No items matching your search criteria were found.".  Any idea why?

Side note, I have no trouble identifying Movies.

"\TV\Constantine (2014)\Season 01\S01xE01

Using that X signifies a mulitpart episode from the naming conventions, afaik

instead try \TV\Constantine (2014)\Season 01\S01E01  OR   \TV\Constantine (2014)\Season 01\1x01

Hi, try identifying with the tvdb id instead.

Thanks, I did remove the x but no change.

Thanks, I checked tvdb and the Constantine Series id is 273690. I entered that into the TheTVDB Id: box in the Identify dialog and I'm still getting "No items matching your search criteria were found.".  Also, that response is instantaneous, like it's not actually checking the internet at all.

Can you post the server log but sounds like your setup is not communicating with provider sites.

I removed Constantine, then replaced it, trying to trigger another identify attempt. Here is the log file.

Thanks for your help

Im also having a nightmare with identification with certain shows. There's definitely something weird going on.

Example:

Folder name = [Reeve] Tropic of Capricorn (2008) [tvdbid=81419]
Files names = Tropic of Capricorn S01E01 Namibia and Botswana ...etc...

Doesnt pick it up, whereas ....

Folder name = [Reeve] Tropic of Capricorn Simon Reeve (2008) [tvdbid=81419]

is recognised.
The official name in TVDB is just "Tropic of Capricorn".

So, putting the extra "Simon Reeve" in the title gets it picked up, even though that's not the title in the database.
Go figure ....

I should also point out that Ive noticed that  'refresh data and images" doesnt work properly all the time, whereas going in and deleting all the images manually then rebuildng does. So that might have been a factor for me, as I dont always go through and manually delete all the images when refreshing, as it seems you have to.

Logs and specific examples are needed.

But to your Folder name issue Emby could careless about the name since you provided providerid.  What is your proiveder order?

The response for moviedb.org looks like this:

{"status_code":7,"status_message":"Invalid API key: You must be granted a valid key.","success":false}

API keys are ok?

Yes as the log is obfuscated as you see the leading and trailing periods for the key.

It is not a Series. That is a special for the new show.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live - The Walking Dead: The Return - TheTVDB.com

The special does not have any externalid on provider so it is no searchable.  (only looked at TVDB)

But if you want it as its own item then yes TMDB has it per that api call above.

The Walking Dead: The Return (2024) — The Movie Database (TMDB) (themoviedb.org)

So this will depend on how you organize your media as it is a Movie (Documentary) or Special Episode.
