Can I use user profiles for watched/unwatched status on remote server?

Hi, I just got emby premiere and am trying to get everything setup correct but need some help with user profiles.

I have an emby server, and also a friend has given me access to their server.

I want to use profiles to keep watched/unwatched status separate for each of my family members.

As I understand for my own server it is enough to setup separate users on my own server, then they each login as a different user.  (Still not sure how this will work on FireTV and AndroidTV boxes, hopefully for the kids it will be easy for them to switch as it is in Netflix, Amazon Video, etc.)

But am I correct in understanding that there is no way to do this on my friend's remote emby server unless he sets up a login for each of my family members?  Or there is a way to store the watched/unwatched status for each individual user on my local server for the media residing on the remote server?

I'm afraid the two servers are independent, and cannot be made aware of each other - so asking your friend to make additional logins is the only way, sadly.
