"We're unable to connect to the selected server right now."

Hey people,

I've got an Emby server hosted on my computer and connect to one at a friends. I have no issues accessing my personal server on my network but out of the 5 devices that I've tried to log into my friends on (-Nvidia Shield, -PC, -Different Roku, -Cell Phone), my Roku Express+ simply refuses to connect. I get an error: "We're unable to connect to the selected server right now. Please ensure it is running and try again.  Timeout waiting for a response from the server" when I try a manual connection.  When I use my Emby Connect, it loads for a couple of minutes then goes back to the server select screen.

I've got both of my servers on my Emby Connect, invitations confirmed and can access both - with no issues - on every other device.  I've tried clearing my Emby connect email, re-confirmed the invitation, I cleared my data off of my Emby Roku app and finally factory resetted my Roku and started fresh.  I've checked my network to make sure nothing's blocked on this device.

---------------------

"Version 4.7.14.0

Emby Server is up to date

Running on http port 8096, and https port 8920

In-Home (LAN) access: http://ip:8096

Remote (WAN) access: https://address:443

------------------------------------------------------

I'm lost and getting stressed - there's no reason why it shouldn't load for me.  Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Also has your friend ever used remote access on their server before, or is this the first time they're trying it?

If they've never tested it then the problem is very likely  not on your end.

Hi.  Are you sure you are using the proper protocol and port on the Roku?

Yep, I've entered the same server address and port on all of my devices but nadda!

Is your Roku on the same local network as the server? What server address are you trying to use?

I do have a server on my PC for my stuff and it's on my LAN, but the server I need help with is located elsewhere and I'm trying to connect remotely (WAN)  I'm trying to connect to the same address & port of that server as I have done on all of my other devices.

Are you using https?  if so, did you preface the address in the manual address field with "https://"?

Yes I am.   I've also tried to replace the https with http.  I've tried their LAN port number as well.

____________

n-Home (LAN) access: http://their.local.ip:8096

Remote (WAN) access: https://address.I.use:443

___________

And that exact same address works from a browser from the same network?

If so, it could be a certificate problem where the Roku doesn't trust the cert.

Yes it does, just re-verified!  I didn't think about a certificate issue;  I can borrow my parents Roku and see if I can connect from my home network.  is there any way to change the security settings on the Roku to accept (possibly) bad/expired certificates?

Not that I'm aware of.

Okay, I borrowed a Roku Premier and was able to get it going.  When I first entered my information on the problematic Roku, it did log in.  I can't remember if it booted me right off or wouldn't load again after I changed server's and tried to go back.  But since the initial login, I can't get back on w/o the login screen resetting.

Hi, what do you mean by login screen resetting?

After I add the server (host & port), the server pops up - I have a sign in screen.  It shows the server, My username, "wake server" and "delete server" options.  I'll click on my username then the next screen does the loading circle and it resets back to the server select screen.

My kids have their own profile linked to the server, as well, but since they don't use this box, I stay logged in and it only shows my account.  I'll send some screenshots of it when I get home later on!

That's odd. Can you please attach the emby server log from when this happened:

Thanks.

Off the top of my head, a couple things I can think of, make sure remote access is enabled in server network settings, and also in the user permissions of the user you're trying to sign in with.

According to the screen you showed, you are logged in via Emby Connect but that would not be the case if you entered the server manually so something is off here.

Are you trying to use Connect?  If so, try re-establishing that connection in the server settings.  If not, try logging out on the device and then logging in again manually.

  • 2 weeks later...

Just sent the log. I couldn't access this server and didn't see an option to send so I logged into my personal server and sent the log. Hopefully that helps. It's coming from a ShineHigh247 name.

Remote access and everything is enabled - Ive checked permissions, remote access & devices as has the server owner that I'm trying to connect to. I'm still able to log into it on all of my other devices (on mine and my kids profiles).

I've tried to sign into it manually and with my connect. I've also deleted the server and had another invite sent. Nothing.

I just undid my emby connect login, again, and manually entered the server info. The dotted lines have been spinning for almost 5 minutes. It's wanting to connect but won't.

I just logged into it on my phone so I know the account is working fine.

Unfortunately, with Roku, that log won't show us what happened with the other server.  Are you trying to connect using SSL?  It could be a certificate the device won't accept - but you should get a message.
