4K HDR Movies on AndroidTV are foggy and veiled

..it looks like some color is missing. The HD version of the movie, is much better.  I have a 65" HDR10 screen here. The movie is played with the Embyapp on Android TV. The playback of the video material is direct, without transcoding. I have some 4K blurays here, no one of them have a nice picture.

For example the movie "The Visitor from the Future". Bad picture on the tv, but perfect picture on the webbrowser. The difference is that the web browser transcodes and removes the HDR part automatically. Screenshots attached.

What is here wrong? Is my HDR version too old? Or is there something additional that needs to be configured on Emby?

Very Thanks :) and many greetings

If the problem arises with direct play only, then Emby is not really involved.  The problem is something between your files and your TV...

Perhaps there is a problem with how the BDs have been ripped, such that the TV doesn't recognise the HDR layer.  How do you do the ripping?

Is your TV activating it's HDR mode (usually you get some indication on screen when doing so).

If not, then you are playing HDR material back in SDR, which will look very washed out.

As Paul has said above - it's likely the way you have ripped the BR's - or it's possibly some settings on the playback client.

Any form of transcode will 'tonemap' the colour back in to make it SDR - that's why it looks 'better' but it's not HDR.

From the screenshot I'd suspect that DTSHDMA is triggering the transcode. The TV probably doesn't like it. In the emby client you have a few options dealing with audio, play with them. Disabling bit-streaming for example...

If that doesn't work, try something with (E)AC3.

Transcoding is not the problem - quite the contrary, transcoded content looks 'better' to the OP due to tonemapping - OP's having issues with DirectPlayed content.

Right, I was bit quick... 😅

Could be a misconfiguration of the client then, or an old HDMI cable, or the TV doesn't support HDR on all inputs, or needs HDR enabled in the settings...

When direct playing the logs are not useful (for this issue), because Emby is doing no processing on the video at all.  The file is being sent to the TV as it is - so either the TV is not correctly set to activate the HDR, or the file doesn't contain the HDR information in a form that the TV can recognise (but Emby recognises it, because it gets it right when transcoding, so the issue is most likely with the TV).

For the time being, you can select Playback correction twice in OSD Cog menu, that'll trigger transcoding (and tonemapping) so that item will at least ll be watchable.

Plenty of test files here

https://4kmedia.org/

If these do not display HDR10 (but direct play) then as I above, I suspect you may have HDR turned off on your TV ?

Thrilling...I found the setting for HDR on the TV. It is only available when a movie is running with HDR. And it works correctly. When I disable it the movie is really washed out. Now I know the difference.

So either I have bad HDR material on the bluray's, or the HDR implementation on the TV is bad.

So everything works correctly. Well in a way. I'll look into this further and give feedback.

Or the rip of the Blueray has done something odd; though the fact that when transcoding Emby processes the HDR correctly suggests that the file is OK.  How do you make the rips?

Hmm - I'd expect that to be OK.  Maybe there's something about the TV after all...
