As of now, the only format that will do direct stream from my Synology DSM7.1 to Firefox 114 is x246/h264.

Is there an easy way to figure out the list of formats that will make both the Synology and Firefox happy, and perform direct streaming / direct play ?

It has nothing to do with your Synology and everything to do with your client (browser in this particular case, Firefox being one of the browsers with lesser support for various formats, most notably no HEVC support).

Can I Use is usually a good indication of bowser formats support:

"video format" | Can I use... Support tables for HTML5, CSS3, etc

You can also check your browser capabilities ay Html5Test:

HTML5test - How well does your browser support HTML5?

Took a look at CanIUse, and it replies that MPEG4 is supported under Firefox 114.0.2.

I played a file that reports as

Quote

Title SD MPEG4
Codec MPEG4
Codec TagXVID
Profile Advanced Simple Profile

However, Emby still transcodes it from my Synology.

Joined the logs, hope it will help

Don't know of any browser/Html5 player that'll play XviD/DivX files natively.

Oooh .. Did not see that.

I guess I'm still confused about codecs. I had no idea "Codec Tag" carried yet another crucial information.

I thought that DivX was a variant of x264, which was yet another variant of MPEG4.

The Emby page mixing DivX and MPEG-4 confuses me even more.

Guess I'll have to dive into some history of codecs.

There is no web browser that supports mpeg4 as of today.

No browser that supports mpeg4-XVid right ? Because mpeg4 h264 looks widely supported.
