So, I just picked up an Xbox Series S and found it has the Emby Theatre App available.

I'm contemplating selling me Nvidia Shield and using the Xbox to watch Emby.

What are some people's thoughts? Is Xbox a better experience or on par?

No. You can't play 4k videos on Xbox. That, to me, is a deal breaker.

Really? The app doesn't allow it? The Series S is running in 4k.

I know. Every time I try I get audio and a black screen.

Did a test and it worked then app crashed. Tried again and it worked…

I will keep testing.

I noticed when watching live tv it appears to stop like it’s buffering and starts again.

Is there buffer settings on the theatre app?

No but we'll take a look at that. Thanks for reporting.

Okay, seems like 4k content crashes the app and live tv is where I saw the stuttering.

4k content has crashed for me before too. Usually it's just a black screen though.

Xbox One S can handle 4K videos but only if they're encoded as HEVC.  For that reason, my 4K videos are stored as both AVC and HEVC formats.

This is great to know....

I'm still unclear with Emby's direction on the clients. Are we moving to Emby Theatre, are we loosing the ability to change via channel numbers, what's the road map?

Lastly, what do you use for a remote? I bought one of these remotes off Amazon, and the IR is so sensitive to slight movements. If you're not directly pointed at the Xbox it won't work.

All of my 4k movies are HEVC and none of them play. How exactly are you creating your 4k videos?

I ran the AVC through FFMPEG on a different computer.  It took over a day to convert but it worked.

Apparently Xbox will reject 4K media with subtitles?  Maybe that's the problem?

MKV container:
Video: HVC1 3840x2160 25fps [V: hevc main L5.0, yuv420p, 3840x2160 [default]]
Audio: AAC 48000Hz stereo [A: Stereo [eng] (aac lc, 48000 Hz, stereo) [default]]

Hmmm, don't think so. From what I've noticed it seems Emby is trying to direct play the audio and if I could set it to automatically transcode the audio it would play.
