4K ATSC 3.0 stream from HDHomeRun Flex 4K playing at 1080p, not 4K

I have an HDHomeRun Flex 4K receiving an ATSC 3.0 signal, but it maxes out at 1080p on my TCL Roku 4K TV.

Running Emby Server on Linux with the transcoding H.265 HEVC decoder set to VAAPI as per the screenshot below (when I try QuickSync, the stream hangs at 26%).

Looking at the ffmpeg log, perhaps there's an issue with the ffmpeg decoder.

Any idea why I'm not getting the 4K stream?

Are you sure you're getting that channel in 4K? As per your remux log, there's no transcoding occurring, only audio gets converted, source video is 1080p.

According to what the HDHR web interface is telling me in that screenshot, it's an ATSC3.0 signal.

Any other method I can use to definitively tell me if I'm getting a 4K signal?

ATSC3.0 is a standard, not resolution - meaning it is not necessarily 4K, as it offers support for UP TO 4K/120 and three video formats: legacy SD, interlaced HD and progressive video up to 4K. Maybe that particular channel transmits in HD only.

Got it.  HDHR is telling me I get the following channels in HEVC, and none of them are streaming at 4K unfortunately.

These channels, according to the respective websites and info I've found on the web, are transmitted with 4K resolution, so clearly I am missing something here...

Wondering if you know of any tools I can use to definitively tell me what my input signal resolution is that the HDHR sees?

Which is what your log is showing also, just not at the resolution you're expecting:

"DisplayTitle":"1080p HEVC","Height":1080,"Width":1920

Unfortunately not, never had the need to delve into that, maybe @softworkz or @cayars will have some tip.

Spoiler

I stand corrected.  As mentioned, no 4K OTA broadcasts... yet.

Thanks for the responses.

There are some stations in Cleaveland, Chicago and Phoenix that do 4K broadcasts.

Some other markets are doing trial tests.

Check and see how the Superbowl is broadcast in your area.

Everything I have read says the 4k Super Bowl will be only cable and streaming  services.  Even then it might only be upscaled 1080p since they might not be using 4k cameras.

It might be an interesting test for the Silicon Dust transcoding streamer more than 4k, although Emby users won't see this.

Hi,

There are cable companies that are showing media in 4k?

I always thought the highest they go is 1080 and to get 4k you need to stream..

Has this changed?

Thanks,

Bryan

Verizon FIOS offers 4K streams (for certain events) which are available via the HDHomeRun PRIME. However they are typically HLG not HDR10.
