Unable to load subtitles

May be more of a server thing however when I start most videos on my Shield TV I get the message on the screen briefly in the subject.  These videos when opened in Emby show a Subtitles of Und Closed Captions 1.  Sure it's some setting I enabled in Emby but not sure what causes it.

Video for reference is:

720p H264

AAC Stereo Audio

Then shows a subtitle track titled as mentioned with a codec of EIA_608.

Note I never see any subtitles with this just what is imbedded in the video files.

Thoughts?

Hi.  If you don't desire to have the subtitles, you can set your subtitle defaults not to try and turn them on.

These closed captions must be of the type that is not recognized by the player.  We are still investigating that.

Thanks so better to change it to Forced Only?  Right now subtitle mode is set to Default.

It's entirely your preference but that's another option, yes.

I'm kind of having the same issue, I notice that this start 1 or 2 weeks ago.

For some videos, it is showing on Und Closed Captions 1

If I choose this one, no subtitle is loaded on Firestick 4K and also he loads the English subtitle, but if I open on browser, the subtitle works in Portuguese.

Is not happening to all videos, but for some of them it is. I already tried to download different versions of the video file, but is always the same case.

Also, I'm not sure why is showing as closed captions since is just a srt file:

Vampire.Academy.S01E08.1080p.WEB.H264-GLHF.pt-BR.srt

I attached 2 pictures, 1 showing the Firestick, and other showing the PC version.

If I try to select the Language Portuguese:

  • On Firestick: it shows the English version
  • On PC: no subtitle is loaded

I have to choose Und Closed Captions 1 to load the Portuguese version.

Any idea why?

Hi.  The file also has closed captions.  The subtitle file you showed is also there as "Portuguese (Brazil) (SRT)".  Is that the subtitle you want?

Yes, the subtitle is attached here.

But you didn't select that subtitle.  What happens if you select that subtitle during playback?

@ebr Like I mentioned:

  • On Firestick: it shows the English version
  • On PC: no subtitle is loaded

I have to choose Und Closed Captions 1 to load the Portuguese version.

Try refreshing the metadata on that video. Perhaps it is out of date.

@Luke I tried to refresh but nothing changes.

I tried to open on Media Player Classic, and it is showing the subtitles, and there is no Closed Caption.

I also attached the info from emby server

Then there must be a closed caption stream inside the video file, and sometimes these are empty which would explain why it's not showing anything. Try selecting your external subtitle instead and see how that compares.

Then it brings to the problem that I was trying to explain.

On Web browser:

  • If I select "Portuguese (Brazil) (SRT)
    • no subtitles is showing
  • If I select "Und Closed Caption 1"
    • Brazilian subtitles is loaded
  • If I select the embedded English of Spanish
    • It works

On Firestick/Fire TV:

  • If I select "Portuguese (Brazil) (SRT)
    • no subtitles is showing
  • If I select "Und Closed Caption 1"
    • no subtitles is showing
  • If I select the embedded English of Spanish
    • It works

It is not happening to all videos, it's happening for some videos around 10 files.

Hey I tried to run on my Android TV, and I'm getting the same problems.

I also tried to run in my Samsung Fridge (Web browser) and I got the same problem.

My parents are using Firestick, and they are experiencing the same problems.

You shouldn't see the same problem on the web app. The problem with this is isolated in both of the android apps.

If you don't see subtitles with the web app, please open a topic in the web app section of the community. Thanks.

Hello. I am having the same problem on android tv.

Looking for a solution I saw that the problem is because of closed captions that the player does not recognize. You can remove these subtitles with the following command:

ffmpeg -i input.mkv -codec copy -bsf:v "filter_units=remove_types=6" output.mkv

Hi @kirkj

Hi.  Can you try sideloading our standard android app on the same device and see how that compares?

Thanks.
