Actor images not downloading automatically when an .nfo is present

Hi there,

 

I’ve found quite a few similar threads over the years but I can’t figure out how to fix this.

What I’ve found is that when I add a movie with an .nfo I don’t get the actor images.

Instead I see this:

If I click on one to open it, this triggers the image download, and it’s there from then on:

I’m rebuilding my Emby Server so I’m wanting to do this automatically. When I tested another movie with no nfo file, all the images pre-download fine.

  • I have attempted to refresh metadata for the movie and this hasn’t made a difference.
  • I used TinyMediaManager to force only tmdb actor info, this appears to have helped. However in many cases there will be imdb data still present, I suspect maybe this is the issue.

Hi, images for actors come when the movie or series metadata is obtained, so try refreshing metadata on those.

Did you enable "Show Advanced settings"?  

But sounds like this setting 

Download images in advance
By default, most images are only downloaded when requested by an Emby app. Enable this option to download all images in advance, as new media is imported. This may cause significantly longer library scans.

At the same time for people the image url is not used at all and Emby will compare the imdbid to your people folder as that is all you are providing but most of Emby people folders normally are by TMDBid.

You need to revise your TMM settings, and make sure you use only TMDB scraper for actors; for existing items that used IMDB, you need to rescrape/rewrite NFOs (right-click Enhanced Editing submenu).

@GrimReaper Thanks. I realise this is more a TMM thing. I've done what you suggested and it's almost fixed it. Strangely there are some actors still stuck on imdb on certain movies that I tested:

Most are tmdb. I scraped actors in TMM as tmdb. I checked tmdb and Carlos Lasarte actor does exist and has an image.

It seems I need to purge all actors first but I'm not sure how to do that easily. Any ideas? However it also still sounds like it could be a bug? Should Emby discard everything except tmbid then download art based off that?

You cannot purge them but can rescrape them all:

Select all movies>right-click 'Scrape metadata for selected movie(s)', in the dialog that opens select TMDB under Metadata downloaders, untick all items except Actors under 'Metadata to be scraped', make sure 'Do not overwrite existing data' is unticked. NFOs will be automatically rewritten upon process finished, no interaction will be needed from your side. 

(Don't know whether you're saving actor images to .actors subfolder, to speed up above process, you might untick 'Download actor images' under Settings>Movies>Artwork>Extra Artwork; note that depending on the size of your collection, it might still take some time even with no artwork download.)

Hm. What is your default scraper, are you using TMDB or Universal movie scraper?

Well I use Universal as my preference but in this testing I'm forcing it to use TMDB to make sure. Just in case, I changed my default to TMDB and tried a re-scrape and same thing. It seems to keep the existing actors no matter what. The only way so far I've figured out, is to delete the nfo, delete the movie from the TMM database and re-scrape it from scratch. When I do that I can use the universal movie scraper because I've got actors set to use TMDB.

You should test with 'Scrape... -force best match' with TMDB scraper only, without deleting anything, see what gives. 

Or use TMDB for Actors field in Universal movie scraper and 'Scrape... -force best match' with your default.

I think in summary, having the TMDB info in the NFO would fix it, which is a problem with TMM not replacing it for some reason however I think it would be desired behaviour for Emby to still download the art without having to open the actor when an NFO contains IMDB data as well/instead of TMDB data.

TMM recently added a setting where you can choose whether or not to write NFOs as locked. If you choose not to write them as locked and re-write all NFOs, Emby will download actor images on import.

You don't even need to re-scrape the NFOs with TMDB to get the images. You can use the IMDB scraper in TMM. As long as the actor's name matches exactly, it will download the image.
