Emby Theater v3.0.15 complains when connecting to Emby Server v4.2.1.0

Hi!

I have just installed Emby Server v4.2.1.0 on my ageing FreeNAS v11.2u8 server via a Plugin.

I know this is an old version of Emby, but it's the latest version available as a FreeNAS v11 Plugin and since the Ports & Packages for FreeBSD v11.2 are no longer readily accessible, the Plugin is the only approach I could find to deploy the Emby server. Upgrading my FreeNAS box isn't an option just yet...

It works nicely and I can successfully playback from my existing video library using the inbuilt Emby web-player. I decided on that basis to purchase a lifetime-licence.

My next step was to install Emby-Theater on my Windows (7) laptop. It installs fine (v3.0.15) and immediately finds the server on my LAN.

However, when I try to connect, I receive the error "This Emby server needs to be updated. To download the latest version, please visit https://emby.media". I can't proceed past this point.

In debug mode, the server log extract at the precise moment of trying to connect just shows:

When pointing my browser to http://10.0.2.12:8096/emby/system/info/public, I get the following response from v3.0.15 (I've masked some items):

 {"LocalAddress":"http://x.x.x.x:8096","WanAddress":"http://****.net:8096","ServerName":"emby-svr","Version":"4.2.1.0","Id":"xxxx"}

The Emby-Theater client logs at this time (the laptop system clock is about 60secs behind the server):

Imagining a version compatibility issue between the new client and the legacy server, I then found a number of older versions of Emby-Theater from around the same time as server v4.2.1 (Summer 2019) and tried v3.0.8, 3.0.9 as well as a much older v2.77 - all find the server and report the very same error upon trying to connect.

I've since tried the Windows 10 App version of Emby-Theater on another host, and the same error is displayed.

Any ideas of how to move forward would be most welcome 🙂

Hi Luke - an entirely valid question and upgrading FreeNAS would be the more pragmatic thing to do...

As it happens, I have a bunch of legacy (Warden) based Jail's upon which I rely and also use FreeNAS's Domain Controller feature - neither of which are supported from 11.3 onwards. The effort involved in restoring all the services I use is a big task for the summer holidays...

And I'm perplexed as to why a client of the same vintage as the server (v3.08) would still complain about the server version.

I have exactly the same error message from Emby-Theater (Windows 10) freshly downloaded and installed on a new computer :  "This Emby server needs to be updated. To download the latest version, please visit https://emby.media". On other computers with Emby-Theater installed a few months ago, I have also the same message from one or two days. So, it's impossible to connect Emby-Theater to the server any more...

Emby server is on a WD NAS and is already updated (v4.5.4.0) from a few months ago.

No problem with the emby application on my LG TV.

Note : excuse for my bad english, I speak french natively.

Hi, I think it's just not detecting that there's an update, but the latest version is now 4.7.4.

Oh ! OK.

Is it possible to update emby server without having to recreate all my libraries ?

Thanks for your help :)

OK, thanks. I will try to do that by the end of the week.  I hope the problem of not detecting a new version of emby server is solved in version 4.7.4. ;)
I hope that il will resolve the problem with emby-theatre. I will send you feedback anyway.

Thank you again Luke for your availability and your clear and quick answers.

Hello Luke, I updated emby server on my WD NAS and now Emby-Theatre can connect to it (no more message asking for server update). 😀
For information, I updated the OS of my NAS at the same time (from OS3 to OS5).
If it can help others, here's how I did it:

1. on the emby server web page : make a backup of the configuration with the tool "configuration backup". The backup folder is on the NAS.

2. on the NAS web page : stop emby server 4.5.4 then uninstall the app.

3. on the NAS web page : update the OS from v3 to 5.

4. on the NAS web page : install manually the last version of emby server dedicated to my NAS model : emby-server-western_digital_ex2_ultra_os5_4.7.5.0_arm.bin (downloaded on https://emby.media/download.html).

5. on the NAS web page : start emby server.

6. on the emby server web page : all my librairies were still present. I just wait that the scan ended. To my amazement, I didn't need to manually load the backup folder ! Everything (libraries, current readings, new additions, etc) was kept without doing anything. A stroke of luck, Luke ? ;)

No, just means the uninstall did not remove the data folder all of Emby configs/dbs are stored in and the OS upgrade did not affect that location either.

Hi, I knew that the backup folder was still there but what surprises me is that the new version of emby server found and used this backup on its own. It's strange, isn't it?
