Choppy playback for 1080p mkv

Hi all,

Thought I'd have another crack at Band of brothers in 1080p. Content starts really slowly, and after that is choppy to say the least.

Never had these issues.

Quality is set to automatic, which then selects 1080p - 60mbps

Looking at the statistics for nerds:

Video: 1080p hevc. Main 10 120 9,7mbps 23,976 FPS.

Transcode (H264)

Sound: English dts-hd MA 5.1

Transcode (ac3)

Tried different audio tracks (ac3 direct) to no avail.

Manually setting 720p does seem to work. Although statistics then show exactly the same values.

Any clues what I can check? What is going on here?

Emby servers logs are here:

Not getting any error messages, just temporary (Long!) hangs.

Tried the exact same file on the Chromecast+GTV (wireless) and it plays without any issues.

The LG with wired LAN seems to be the culprit somehow.

We have actually seen reports from users where the wireless chip on the LG tv's often performs better than wired.

I could try... It's 100mbit, but should be sufficient I guess?

Not so easy to run a speedtest I guess.

Let me check if the browser supports it.

It does... Speedtest on the wired connection gives 83Mbps... That's not too good.

Wireless it maxes out at 125. Not that impressive, but could try a bigger file.

Although it's still hanging wireless. ;)

Can you post the ffmpeg log.

And if you played without subtitles?

It appears converting and burning in dvdsub subs is to much for this hardware (fps=8.6).

I'll give it a go. Think I started out without the subs.

Is that server side hardware? Or TV hardware?

No issues at all with Chromecast.

And never had an issue with any files before.

Transcoding is done via server hardware.

Can only guess different playback methods.

&TranscodeReasons=SubtitleCodecNotSupported

21:33:51.670 Stream mapping:
21:33:51.670   Stream #0:0 (hevc) -> scale_vaapi
21:33:51.670   Stream #0:6 (dvdsub) -> scale
21:33:51.670   hwupload -> Stream #0:0 (h264_vaapi)
21:33:51.671   Stream #0:2 -> #0:1 (copy)

That's weird. Just bought a new DS1520+ recently. Should be fast enough for this application I would say.

Very much hope we can rule this out!

Burning in subtitles is very costly even for a powerful server machine. I would suggest using external art subtitles instead

Disabling subs does seem to help.

What's the best way to go about subtitles then? From the UI of the TV?

Our subtitle download features can help you acquire them.

You mean downloading during playback?

Somehow even for a classic like Band of Brothers it cant seem to find many of them.

Do i need to setup something?

Yes that helped. Usually disabling the subs works. No clue why though.

And it's very inconsistent which subs are chosen and/or causing issues.
