IMDB (industry standard) vs TVDB (community based)

Can anyone say why Emby uses a wiki type DB being TVDB rather than IMDB which is industry standard and accurate?

My point is it is actually doing my head in because it is WRONG. TVDB is reporting 18 episodes in a season when in actual fact the season has 30! It is also rearranging the order of the files and I have all 30 episodes but Emby is telling me I am missing 2 because it doesn't line up with the wiki DB rather than the actual 100% professional, legit one. I have also confirmed with the channel that air the season and it was a 30 episode season not 18.

I like Emby but there are some real obvious flaws.

Sure can: cost.

Access to IMDB is absurdly expensive.

Your simplest solution is to name your files to match TVDB data.

Cost, mostly.

IMDB is very expensive compared to these other sources, which are either free or relatively inexpensive.

And while it’s true that the information on IMDB can usually be more accurate, a lot of it is sourced by the community as well.

TVDB also accommodates multiple season orders, so it’s possible the season order you are looking for is already there.

Thats what I thought and that aint my solution. I am going to have to let go of my OCD issue when it comes to this as I have the issue in just about every TV series in my library and then to make matters worse my husband is in the industry so its a no go. It might even be the thing that makes me go back to Plex sorry to say

I'd be interested to see some examples of these problem shows on TVDB.

Same, because as @samuelqwe mentioned TVDB often have multiple sort orders for series:

And Emby does provide some flexibility around this:

Because based on the options available to post under I thought this the most appropriate as it’s a tool that is used. However, I may not have the same “smarts” as you to figure out where this should live. Maybe there should be a more general title, or direction on where to post so the posting police don’t give me any more tickets.

You must have a very unusual collection of series, is all I can say to that.

I can sympathize with this to some extent, if you rip your content from disc (DVD/Blu-Ray).

The only source for this info at the moment is TVDB (Aired, DVD, Absolute.. etc.). As stated above IMDB is just out of reach of most apps like this.

The way Emby handles this is a little bit funky and seemed backward to me, well it was last time I ran into it.. :) and takes some effort on your part.

The only way I could get DVD order to work was to initially name them as "Aired" order and scan them.. then change the order to DVD via the editor and refresh (maybe I'm dumb but that's all that worked). Then Emby would reshuffle them into the correct order. Just give us some examples of your problem series and maybe someone can help.

Imdb is also error prone by the way.

Often the same errors get propagated across all the databases, I have noticed.

Hi,

You can also disable TVDB and use TheMovieDB as metadata provider.

image.png.fe818abee7ff30a3b590d10bd24e290f.png

Sorry, but my parameters are in French, This page is located in the "Media library" parameters..

And, as TVDB and TMDB are community driven, you can also edit episodes order and descriptions to solve your issue and share this correction to the community.

I, personally, only use TMDB and named my medias to ensure detection is correct : insert "[tmdbid=111111]" in the movie or folder name...

just a few examples of shows? just names, no need for screen shots. even just the name of the original show you were having issues with.

A few off the top of my head are Slutever, Ghost Adventures, Top Chef, Masterchef Professionals, Parks and Recreation

Looks like TheTVDB is very wrong on this one, TheMovieDB at least has it as 2 seasons correctly but the episode look all out of order.

Would be cool if IMDB was free 🙂

Yes it would but I am manually adjusting one at a time. Another one and the easy fix was identifying it was Filthy Rich. But I have one question that no matter how hard I look I can’t find it but then again my glasses may need cleaning. Where is IMDB’s unique ID because if I get that I can add that to the metadata in Emby and that should also help me

There are earlier episodes that are hard to find.  The two newer seasons starting in 2018 are indexed as seasons 5 and 6 on thetvdb.

Part of the problem with Slutever is IMDB has created multiple series and standalone videos out of what appears to be a single show separated by more than a couple years between seasons. Where as thetvdb.com has them all merged together as a single show.

Based on TheTVDB, here is how IMDB has them broken up.

Slutever S1 & S2 (2012) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6101974/

Slutever S3E1 (2016) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9232956/

Slutever S3E2 (2016) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9232952/

Slutever S3E3 (2016) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9232946/

Slutever S3E4 (2016) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9232950/

Slutever S3E5 (2017) - not sure where this one ended up.

Slutever S4 & S5 (2018) - https://www.imdb.com/title/tt7829456/
