Emby app and Dolby Vision

I wasn't able to get the Emby app to work with DV either on my LG CX. But DV plays fine using the Nvidia Shield. So it is the app and not the media.

Right now it looks like LG is not making the function available to third party apps. At least the ones that aren't LG partners.

Hmm.. could have sworn I originally had DV working via MP4's on my LG C8 TV / LG App before I got my shield .. gonna have to go and test now ... 🤪

How did your test go?

Sounds like a Shield Pro is the sure fire way to ensure best performance with any TV, or at least LG?

The Shield is a great option, yes.

I just ran into this...I'll try to get useful data for you, but on the shield with both the Android TV beta 2.0.80 and the Android app, I got a white screen with audio. The video was Dolby Vision, but the file had 2 video streams. VLC player could select the other video stream and play it but the internal player could not so I had to use VLC player for that one. If I remember correctly, VLC also showed a white screen with audio for the Dolby Vision stream.

The internal player played the video fine on my Pixel 3 and my Windows PC.

Could that be the "my Epson projector (5030 UB) doesn't support it so it couldn't play it"?

Will there be an option in the internal player at some point to select which video stream to play?

Thanks!

I would think we'll eventually support files with multiple video streams.

I bought a new TV: LG OLED EVO C2 55C27LA (2022)

I have a lot movies with DV but none of them are switching to DV using Emby, they just start normal HDR10

Is DV still not supported with Emby and LG?

I haven't tried in a while (I use a Shield Pro), but from memory, it used to be only MP4's, MKV's did not work.

The 100% way to try is to copy the MKV to a USB stick and see if the internal LG Player will play it with DV - if it does, then so should emby.

From my experience, get a Shield Pro.

Saves you a lot of time. 😉

I don't think the Shield Pro would be a good solution now in the end of 2022 as The TV and my AVR both use HDMI 2.1 wit eARC and the Shield Pro still uses HDMI 2.0b
Which can't use eARC, does not support variable refresh rates and is limited to 50-60 Hz (4K)  :(  This would be a downgrade for me

No App can deliver HD Audio over eARC anyway (it's not just emby).  HFR video works with HDMI 2.0b (60Hz) - so it's not a limitation for mainstream video. (almost exclusively 23.976/24/25 or 30fps)

The Shield Pro is still (after 3+ years) the best solution if you want HD Audio via an AVR and 4K DV (all profiles) playback.

The only thing it's missing ,and will be an issue in maybe 3-6 months is AV1 hardware support and it's missing HDR10+ (minor problem imo, this is the losing dynamic HDR format) - but hopefully the Shield 2023 will be out soon to resolve that.

The fact the hardware has not reduced in price since release - shows they are still the high end 'go to' Media player for AV Enthusiasts.

These scripts do just about anything DV related, and tutorial videos are good.  I don't use MP4, but there is an option for that.  The guy who created them has a C2 so I'm sure MP4 works.

Dolby-Vision-Tools - Google Drive

The guy hangs out on the Makemkv forum if you wish to communicate with him.

Could you please re-link these scripts or point towards a source?

I''m not sure, but it seems Emby doesnt detect latest DV video for me, also playing it messe up colors but that can be, because its not playing DV properly yet.
But the codec detection on emby is also totally off.

Emby is not detecting it correctly, for me all DV movies are recorgnized as HDR10 but they all play fine and the tv activates DV

Taking into consideration my previous comment about DirectPlay, for DirectPlay we pass the video directly to the TV player with no modification, Emby doesn't do anything to influence or change the playback characteristics.  So whether the server is detecting DV or not doesn't really make a difference in this case.  Whether or not it plays correctly is then all up to the TV/LG.  That is why it is important to ensure it is DirectPlaying for these tests as if it still doesn't show DV with DirectPlay then it is a TV limitation and not an Emby issue.

Testing via USB is a good confirmation of whether the TV supports the file, independently of Emby (although there are cases where this isn't 100% correct - in rare cases LG restricts some app playback capabilities)

Hello, I will get my new LG55OLEDC23 tv and I wonder it's still better option to buy some Android box for movies with DV? It's still Shield the best option? Or maybe Fire cube 3gen?

I really suggest just using the apps built into the tv.

I guess it really depends what you are using it for - for 4K Remux high bandwidth (> 100Mbit/sec) DV with HD Audio - then Shield Pro is your limited choice (I have ZERO issues with mine) - if you just want to play 4K streaming quality with compressed Audio, then agree FireTV is a good option...

I HAVE THE SOLUTION.

I had the same problem. When playing some DV encoded files through emby on an LG OLED with its native emby app, it is not recognized as DV.

Some files are HDR10 hybrid, in that case it will fallback to HDR10. If the file only contains DV the colors are green and purple, but NOT EVERY file.

First I suspected a meta data problem but then I remembered LG TVs can't play DV in MKV Files. DV can only be played in MP4 files.

Thus the simplest solution is to convert your Dolby Vision MKV files into MP4. The caveat is MP4 doesn't support all types of subtitles and no chapters.

You can do this with ffmpeg with following command:

Quote

ffmpeg -i "input.mkv" -map 0 -strict experimental -c:v copy -c:a copy -c:s mov_text "output.mp4"

Adjust filenames/paths accordingly. The option "-strict experimental" is necessary, otherwise the HDR meta data is not transfered.
