The client is whatever you are using to watch content (Roku, Fire TV, Shield TV, Apple TV or any of a lot of other choices) and the server, which gets installed on a PC or Shield TV or a few other server type systems, is what "serves" the files. You install the server and then allow it to have access the media files you own and then you can connect your client. All devices should be on the same network.
