New Free Playback and Increased Device Limits

The Emby team hopes you and yours are enjoying a Happy Holiday Season.  We would like to announce a couple of changes that will hopefully increase the value of Emby in all of your households.

First, to aid in the transition from our old TV-only Android TV app to the new Standard Android app on that platform, we will be eliminating the need for the app unlock by allowing free playback for up to five TV devices per Emby Server.  Devices beyond that limit will require Emby Premiere.  Previously purchased unlocks will still be honored.

This should allow most households to move to the new app more easily.

Second, recognizing that today's households have more and more devices, we are increasing our standard Emby Premiere License device limit from 25 to 30.  We will then also increase the extended premiere plans from 45 to 50 and 75 to 80.   Existing extended subscriptions will remain the same but new ones will be at these new levels.  All standard licenses will be automatically updated to the new 30 device limit immediately.

You should see all of these changes rolling out over the next week or so.

Happy Holidays from the Emby Team!

Hi, we’ve never said that, so certainly not anytime soon.

I hope not. Thats the only one who doesnt stutter or hang during playback. The only reason i also sideload the android version is the server settings.

I don't like that you advertise it as if it were a gift, you are increasing the devices but charging more money. It is not a gift.

I'm still a bit confused by what I read on my Firestick about a new Emby for Android app - when I clicked on the link it said I already owned it. I realise Firesticks are somewhat like android, but does this new app even apply to me?

I bought a lifetime premier service when I tried Emby - I wasn't getting Jellyfin to work for me, and I am happy with it, but could someonme tell me, explain to me the message about a new app. It even stated available on the playstore, which is odd on a Firestick!?

If the standard license is increased by 20% (from 25 to 30), shouldn't the extended plans be increased by at least the same percentage or even more?

But 5 was added to all device schemes.

We will then also increase the extended premiere plans from 45 to 50 and 75 to 80.

"recognizing that today's households have more and more devices"
25 to 30 is 20%

Everything is fine until this point, but I fail to see the logic behind the Emby team's thinking that those who were not covered by those 25 limits and opted to pay for a higher plan have now increased only by 11% for the 45 plan and a mere 6% for the 75 plan.

From 1000 to 1005: "But 5 was added to all device schemes."

Eh...

Why can’t we have the app lock? It seems counterproductive to go to forcing people into a monthly subscription. Especially if you have a higher number of users because I think what is the limit 100? I’ve got several people I know who have four or five or even six TVs in their house. Or it seems to be the more common thing these days as sometimes people have four or five TVs several phones tablets. And they may be jumping back-and-forth between those devices all within one day.

What about people who don’t want the features of the premier why can’t they just stick with the app unlock. Also, the standard android version needs to work. It takes longer to load the covers. And it doesn’t offer the ability to change your audio selection like the android TV version does among a few other things.

Hi @Luke

I've just fouind this thread and i have a question regarding the device limits: I bought Lifetime Premiere on 29 November 2024 so my device limit is 25 or it was "upgraded" to 30? And how can i see that (not the limit atm because i already know that's not possible)?

Thanks

All standard licenses will be automatically updated to the new 30 device limit immediately.

So, a Lifetime License is not considered standard?

And how can we know our account details (regarding the device limits "appended" to our account)?

How did you come to that conclusion?

All licenses that are not Extended plans are Standard - including Lifetime.

It's clearly stated on the Premiere page:

License Options

The following licenses are for single household use and carry a 30 device limit.

  • I was just asking because i didn't know what Emby considers "Standard license".
  • "It's clearly stated on the Premiere page" but since i bought the Lifetime more than one month before this post was released, i wasn't sure if the existent Lifetime licenses were covered by the increase of the device limit.

Now that i know that a Lifetime Premiere license is considered "standard", i know that the device limit was increased even to the existing ones prior to that anouncement.

Anyway, i still think that we should have a way to see the details of our Emby account, including the device limit appended to it. If there is a way, I'm sorry but I don't know of it.
