    Overview: Protected media

Protected media playback connects encrypted content with the authorization and platform mechanisms needed to present it.

Encryption makes the stored or delivered bytes dependent on an accepted decryption path. DRM systems coordinate additional policy and licensing relationships, while EME exposes a browser interface into supported protection systems. The pages here distinguish those roles from ordinary codec or network compatibility.

    • DRM-protected media
DRM-protected playback combines encrypted media with a compatible key system, usable authorization and the required processing and output conditions.

    • Encrypted Media Extensions (EME)
Encrypted Media Extensions provides browser APIs for selecting a supported key system and coordinating key sessions needed for encrypted media playback.
